So I'm looking at it possibly getting this right now. It's $149. As far as I can tell, it looks pretty promising. I like how you can add SD card. But right now, it looks slightly too good to be true. And I can't figure out how much each book would cost to purchase.

Never mind, found price of books.

My dad got one and it's quite decent. The screen is exactly like my Sony, if not even better (and it's bigger too), so in that department it's great.

I found the processing speed to be a bit slow, page refreshes were fine but menu navigation was slow compared to my Sony. He said it was slightly annoying but still once you get into the book it's fine.

So overall a decent deal I think.

As for each book just click on the shop all departments link at the top left and there's an ebook category.

Hot dang, the books are a bit pricey for just a digital copy. How do they compare to buying books for the Sony?

I recently got one as a gift and I'll confirm Photon's comments -- page refreshes have a bit of lag, menu access even more so.

The display is crisp and looks great in all light conditions. The unit is extremely light, so no problem to pack around, and the quilted texture on the back makes it feel good in the hand.

My one big gripe is the lack of native ability to clear the 100+ classics it comes pre-loaded with. Many of them interest me, but I'd like to be able to thin the herd as I add new books.

The price of ebooks has gone up recently and it's a huge ripoff by the publishing industry. I'm kind of choked about some of the increases. Also, there are less ebooks available off the bat in Canada now. I'm not liking these recent changes in the industry.

Wow, the books are about the same price as buying them in paperback form. Cheaper than the hardcover for new releases though.

Would you be able to back your books up?

I find it disturbing that a globe and mail bestseller is $15 when it is only $17 for the hardcover since it's already 50%. Perhaps I'm just a traditionalist who likes to pull a book off the shelf versus loading it.

From my limited research I have found that ebooks are generally cheaper or comparably priced to regular books. But considering the high cost of any reading device it will take a long time to recover the cost of the device.

Just for example. I am reading the The Year Of The Floor. The hardcover is $20.68 and the ebook is $15.69 which is $5 cheaper. Not bad. But at that price it would take you 30 books to make up the cost. For me the cost of the books isn't the largest issue. I think selection is a bigger concern.

Still for a stand alone reader the Kobo is pretty attractive compared to everything else.

For me, I like the idea of being able to take a bunch of books with me instead of lugging around books. But I'm also a library user. So when it comes right down to it. I will probably be wasting money. So I'm trying to weigh utility and cost right now. I probably won't end up buying this now. Maybe way way later when it's possible for me to borrow books like a library on this thing.

You should be able to, the Kobo says it supports the Adobe DRM.
Or just buy the book and then download the ePub file somewhere online

I am curious about the Kobo, but I think I am still leaning towards the Sony Reader Pocket. I just figure Sony quality may be worth the extra $20 or so.

The screen on the Sony is smaller keep in mind, I had mine and my dad's Kobo beside each other and it's pretty significant. I'm finding that's my one complaint with the Sony so far.. too many page turns!

Yes except I can't see how books won't still have a place in society in the future unlike cassettes. Might have to write this down though and in 20 years I could be eating crow.

The first time I'd heard about mp3's I noted that I could never go without having a physical album in my hands. Now I go out of my way to ensure I have as little physical media as possible.

The publishing industry is interesting at this point as they're going through the same process that the record industry went through a decade ago. I suppose they are trying to avoid the "mistakes" of letting one company (like apple) have so much control over their content. The downside is now we have different kinds of formats floating around with different kinds of drm. I see how publishers want to protect their content, but I just hope it doesn't alienate the consumer.
