Default Buffalo Routers

So, the Linksys routers I've been using for work and at home have never been as good as they should be.

Anyone use a Buffalo router before?

I'm looking at some of their high performance ones right now. DDWRT ready too, plus in July they'll come pre-loaded with DDWRT.

Worth it?

Is the one I'm looking at.

From what I've read and the people I've asked, it seems a vastly superior router to anything Linksys makes.

thats the same conclusion i came to 3 years ago when i was in the market. at the time, when i was reading about dd wrt, buffalo was preferred over linksys. obviously linksys has the name recogition and mass availability, but not many people dislike their buffalo purchase it seems.

Yeah I just ordered that one above.

Whatever Cisco is doing with Linksys not a lot of people are pleased with it. Then again, Linksys is a router that you buy at Walmart which probably explains why it sucks.

I'll try this one out. See if its any good.

Am I reading that right? It's wireless N but for a wired connection, it's only 10/100?

Yeah.

They have a router one step above that which uses 10/100/1000.

Its about $110.

Your Internet connection is greater than 100Mbit?

Does this router do bandwidth prioritization? One feature I got my current router for, and which it no longer actually works doing, is to set the priority of different packets so that I can play games while having a torrent running in the background (for example) without having a slowdown.

QoS?

I'd assume it has some kind of feature. I'll look into it when I get it. I know DDWRT has features for it, and I'm gonna flash this router with DDWRT.

Yeah QoS stuff.. the higher one (the one with Gigabit) says it has it for playing media.

Hm, I might have to look into one of these.

Buffalo isn't a name I usually associate with high quality, I've always thought of them more along the lines of Trendnet, but I might have to take a look at this.

Well I know its better than Linksys.

If you want QoS stuff, DDWRT has a great interface for it. Buffalo is releasing 3 routers in June/July with DDWRT pre-loaded on them. The one I bought is one of them so I want to find out if the router is worth it.

Well a great interface is good, but you still need the processing power and good code to actually be able to do it effectively. But if it does and the router is good otherwise I'll check it out. I'm tired of my D-Link too.

I've always had good success with Linksys though.

Yeah, it worked awesome when I got it, but a firmware update I made for some PS3 something or other I think messed up the other part, so now that QoS stuff doesn't work. I've tried all kinds of suggestions but it just seems that some options are mutually exclusive (change a setting and thing A works but B doesn't, change back and it reverses).

Really glad I didn't update mine then. I was considering doing but figured I wasn't having any problems so why tempt fate?

I don't understand the hate for "Lynksys by Cisco" I've bought one of these for myself and suggest a couple other people do the same and it's been the best router any of us have ever owned. I had nothing but problems with probably 3 routers before my current one.

No hate really. I've sold or worked with 20 of them the past year and some are great, some go to crap really fast.

The only reason I'm really switching is because the Buffalo routers are better for DDWRT.

^So since I made everyone buy the exact same model as me I just happened to luck out with a good one? I'm glad. Nothing worse than continually having to go downstairs to pull the power to your router. Ugh.

Hey I'm not saying that they're all bad. For the normal home user they're probably fine.

But I've had enough problems with them that I'm looking at a different brand now.

Besides, a Buffalo router that is comparable in price to the 160n has a faster processor and more memory.
