Question Reformatting a PC Help

The PC in our house is riddled with problems and I've decided to just wipe it and start from scratch. Problem is that the friend that built the computer for us never provided us with the Windows discs. So I've purchased a full version myself and now want to reformat the computer and install the new operating system.

Other than backing up the files I want to keep and the itunes libraries is there anything else that I should remember to do before reformatting the machine? Also, how do I save or back up email to bring it over?

I've never done this so any advice or tips would be appreciated!

Thanks!

Outlook PST files if you use Outlook as an Email client.
Favorites folder.

etc.

For your old computer, do you have the license key, if you have the key you can use any disk you want - FYI.

This.

If you aren't able to find your key written down anywhere or on a sticker on your case, download this:
http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/
That'll give you your windows key.

For the license key, you can't use any disk you want, you would think that would be the case but Microsoft didn't do it that way. You have to have the right kind of OEM CD, and even then I've had problems.

And I always seem to forget something when reformatting, so I always do a complete system backup (every file and directory) before reformatting and keep that around for a few weeks until I know I've got everything restored.

Belarc Advisor will give you the product keys for all software installed on your system. You can then print it out so in 6 months when you remembered x software that you downloaded and can't find the key for.

Also, it has been mentioned but backup your bookmarks as well.

Because I believe that my computer is riddled with viruses and other crap would it be a good idea to wipe the computer with dban before installing windows?

Not really necessary, when booting from the CD I would just delete the partitions and then remake them.. the junk is still there but not linked in as files so it's invisible and it'll just get overwritten.
