Recommend a car dealer

I'm looking to book a test drive for a Chev Traverse and a Toyota Highlander.

Can anyone recommend a trustworthy dealer that is willing to negotiate and has not given them problems on post-purchase servicing for either of these brands?

If a place can't help me when I go there and demand to be helped, I go to the next dealership.

I just did a quick search on Edmunds for the Traverse - You can get a 2010 AWD Traverse for under $29,000!


1) Chevy's sell for invoice down there, which is $1,500 off an already big difference between US and CAD prices

2) There is a $2,000 rebate on the Traverse in the US right now.

Hmmm, Traverse might not be the best example - there is $4,200 cash rebate up here, but there is still a good savings:

in Canada, Traverse AWD LS out the door before tax: $36,000 (includes $4,200 cash credit and the $1,350 destination/PDI charge)

in the USA, Traverse AWD LS out the door before tax: $29,000 (includes $2,000 cash credit and the $775 destination/PDI charge)


Still a $7,000 savings, nothing to sneeze at - You save more if you're interested in better-equipped models, like the 2LT or LTZ.

Thanks for the research Amorak, have you done this in the past? Have you dealt with a dealer in Idaho/Montana that is friendly with Canadian customers?

If I end up going this route, the dealership I test drive at sure doesn't matter.

For Chevy, I have had problems in the past with CMP. Shaganappi on the other hand was excellent to deal with. I didn't end up buying from either but 100% difference in the way I was handled between the two.

Amorak, Can you give me a hand figuring out what I need to do to buy a Chrysler Town and Country from the States?

+1. I've bought in the States as well (new Toyota) and saved huge money. You're nuts to buy here (or really wealthy lol).

There are many dealers that are friendly - I suggest buying in Oregon, as there is no sales tax. I think you can buy in Montana too, I think sales tax is either due when you register the car there (which you're not, so you're good) or they make you sign a declaration that you're not a resident and the dealer doesn't charge you - i am sure the Montana dealers are very well versed in the process.

Further to my comments, it appears Sliver did the same and didn't pay any WA state tax, so its likely a due-on-registration tax in WA as well.

I would check the hidden Canadian incentives on Chrsyler products, there can be a lot of cash on the hood.

Dude, you should really check out the new Sienna first. I'm not a Toyota fanboy, either. I have a Chrysler 300c and I love it. For minivans, though, the Sienna cannot be beat and the new model that just came out is by far the best minivan EVAR.

Not a huge savings, but decent at just under $5,000. However there can be equipment differences between a CDN spec and US spec vehicle, so always check them in detail.

It doesn't matter to the dealer - the Manufacturer pays them the warranty rate for a repair regardless of the cars purchase point. They treat it the same way they would any car.

Warranty work is completely problem free. They happily do the work - Toyota pays them and a customer will never say no to free work. It's a North America-wide warranty you get (with Toyota, anyway) whether you buy in the States or in Canada.

I admit that I was worried about that when I bought mine, but I figured even if they didn't honour the warranty, the probability of a major problem affecting a brand new car would be low enough that any little things I would have to pay for myself would be outweighed by the $11K I was saving. Plus if something major did happen, just throw the vehicle on a trailer and take it back to the States for service.

Like I said, though, they honour the warranty so you'll be golden.
