Magic Jack is now available at Memory Express. Thoughts?
So i just called their north store and i guess they are out of the 403 phone numbers. You would get a number with the new area code 587.
Any one used this before? I guess for $30/year it's not too much of a risk.

Never pay a monthly phone bill again!
Your initial purchase price includes your first full year of service. Additional years of service for just $19.95 US per year.
Replace your present phone company and save up to $1000/year or just add a second line. Businesses can save even more with magicJack, becuase no matter how big your business, it's just one low annual fee of just $19.95 US /year. You can also send a magicJack to a loved one who lives or is stationed overseas. This gives them a local U.S. or Canada* phone number. Now you can call them wherever they live and they can call anywhere in the U.S. and Canada at no additional charge.
Use any telephone with magicJack: corded, cordless, portable or DECT. You can make and receive calls from anywhere in your home or office using any cordless phone. Just think of the magicJack as your new phone jack, it's really that simple. Do you have poor mobile phone reception at home? Tired of paying your phone company for a telephone line you rarely use? Use magicJack instead. Get crystal-clear call quality with no monthly bills.
* Additional $10.00 fee per year for Canadian area codes

I think it's a piece of junk personally.. I used it for a few weeks down here until I got Cox Cable/Phone.
DO NOT RECOMMEND - Awful sound quality and good luck running online games or downloading stuff if you want to make a phone call.

The maker of this just got ripped in court in the US for trying to sue someone who gave a negative review.

Actually, the original review said the product worked well, but the terms of service and users-agreement are vile. The EULA allows them to keep track of your phone calls and then offer targeted marketing.

I bought one for my mom so that she could talk to my bro who lives in South Carolina. She signed up for a phone number to have a South Carolina area code and it works great. Plus no long distance phone charges. Woot!

So, this is basically a VoIP phone that plugs into your computer?

You plug it in via USB and then you plug in a phone (not included). My sister doesn't have a home phone, so she bought one of these to use when she is at home/school and it has totally eliminated all but the basic plan from her Cell phone bill.
The sound quality isn't great when she is using her netbook on the University wireless, but I think it might be because the handset she uses at school is kinda crappy.

Buyer beware...just tried one of these. Setup was easy enough, but the sound quality just doesn't cut it. I tried all their suggestions and it simply is not good enough. Choppy and cutouts while trying to talk.
Also, I didn't know this as I kept on seeing money back guarantee, etc. all over the place, but when I installed it and registered, they wanted a $10 charge in addition to the $50 I paid for it at London Drugs. The $10 charge was if I wanted a "Canadian" number. As to not confuse friends and others, I thought a local area code would be a good idea.
After deciding to return this to London Drugs, it took me literally an hour to finally find someone who understood enough English typing in their "live support" box online to find out the $10 is non-refundable. I also don't like the fact they have my credit card details, but they assured me no more charges would appear.
Think I'm going to call my credit card company and ensure that as well as see if I can get my $10 back.

I can't believe no one else has picked up on this. That's a complete deal-breaker right there.

Yeah, I read some of this after the fact. I mean c'mon, who reads those whole agreements?

So anybody still using this? Is it any better than described in the negative posts above, or should I stay away?

Stay away....they tried to charge my credit card again, even after I cancelled it. And continue to send me messages saying I had new voice mail, when I hadn't even used the service for more than 6 months after cancelling basically the same day I bought it.

I have it. I like it. It's 30.00 bucks a year! I don't care that it cuts out the odd time. I have not had any real issues with this at all.

I am the Virtual PBX/Telephony business and I get so many problems and complaints about Magicjack, probably one a day. It WILL work but apparently their customer service is terrible/outsources/hard to get hold of anyone. I have had people who say it works wonderfully for their purpose, and for being such a great price, it's a good value. I would just watch recurring charges on credit cards because that seems to be the most prevalent complaint. I've never used it before so I have no personal experience.

That's cool it works for you, but I don't think I want the hassle of it if it's not perfect. I'll just stick with my regular land line. Thanks guys.

I've got it. Yes the sound quality isnt the best, and it's sometimes unusable if over WIFI. I do find it works well if you travel alot and are staying in hotels with Internet. I've also found its pretty cheap for calling overseas, particularly weird places like Kazakhstan.
