Default Transferring video from PVR to HD

There are a fair number of shows that I've recorded on my PVR that I'd like to keep. Like the "Bob and Doug McKenzie" special and the last episode of ER. But I'd rather keep them on my hard drive than on a DVD... and I don't have a VCR anymore so VHS tape is out.

What is the easiest way to get something from the PVR to the HD?

The PVR is Rogers Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8000 and has DVI ports, but Rogers have them deactivated. Same with the firewire port. So I think analog is the only way to go.

So I'm thinking maybe a flash camcorder or an HDD camcorder is going to be necessary?

I was thinking of using capture software, but the PVR is upstairs in the entertainment unit and very difficult to move. And the computer is here in the basement.

As in holding the camcorder up to the TV?

Get a DVD recorder for $100, and rip the dvd to the PC if you don't want to store the DVD.

When I need to do this, I use my dvd recorder to record the show as it is playing from the PVR.

I haven't attempted this because as I understand, shaw bell etc all these providers had to use very complicated hardware encryption to prevent just this from happening, otherwise it would have broken copywrite law

If you a video card which supports analog to digital conversion you can hook up your PVR to your computer and capture the video. The process is long and kind of ugly (trying to sync up Video with Audio), but it works.

In some cases too (mostly with SD video), the output looks even better then what you are seeing on your TV. Be prepared to eat up a ton of Hard Drive space though
