weather issues in Vancouver
has any other winter Olympic city has as many issues with the weather as Vancouver is right now? i saw on CTV news that Vancouver is the warmest city to ever be awarded the winter games (average yearly temperatures), and everyone and their dog knows that it rains constantly in that region. it's making me question why they were even awarded the games when you see the lengths they have to go to in getting snow on Cyprus, and the downhill stuff may be delayed indefinitely with the rain and fog on Whistler
i'll be very disappointed if these issues really impact the games, we already have a black mark as a host nation with an athlete dying on a brand new luge track

Who cares about the forecast, I'm worried about rioting win or lose in hockey.

IMO their stubbornness is what has been most frustrating. They've known for a month or more that Cypress wasn't having a good snow year. They had every opportunity to relocate the venue and didn't. If weather issues continue, the black mark will be on VANOC, and no one else. Idiots.

What's at Cypress though? Snowboarding (halfpipe), Moguls & Aerials? Not really events that require awesome snow. Trucked in / made snow should do the trick I'd think. Not ideal but not the end of the world. Only thing that could suck would be rain during the events.

Yeah... that...
Think it'd add a degree of difficulty to give each athlete an umbrella for their run?

Really the only issue with the weather in Calgary was the chinook cross wind affecting the ski jumping.
Nakiska was ok, Canmore too, and the bobsled/luge track at COP were ok too.

Yes, it is Canada's fault he died.

I was in Torino and it rained/sleeted every day I was there.
Relocating in the last month isn't a realistic option. there's way too much infrastructure and planning involved to make a decision like that in such a short time period.
As for the issues at whistler for the downhill events, that happens everywhere. World Cups have been cancelled/postponed at locations all over the world. You can't question whistler as a venue for skiing, it's world class in every respect.

It doesn't matter who is at fault, the games will always have an entry on their wiki page about a death occurring, which is obviously a black mark.

It is a black mark on the games, not the nation.
But, as we've seen on FOI, some people simply cannot make an argument without using massive hyperbole.

yes the blackmark is on the games and the IOC for giving the OK to the Vancouver track, but it's still on our soil. you can't say that you wouldn't feel a little bit differently about this whole situation had this tragedy happened in Turin or Sochi instead of Vancouver
and i'm not trying to blame anyone of the Vancouver organizers, it just really sucks to have our games, which are supposed to be a time of celebration and joy, marked by such a tragic event

This is a terrible tragedy, but sadly, deaths aren't anything new to the winter olympics. At the Albertville games in 1992 a speed skier was killed when he crashed into a snow groomer during a training run, and even during the Calgary games in 88 the Austrian ski team's chief doctor collided with another skier, which pushed him into the path of a snow groomer.
Accidents happen. The most tragic part of this one is that it seems it could have been prevented through a little more foresight by the course designers.

Yes I can. This incident is no more a black mark on Canada than the bombing in Atlanta was a black mark on the United States. Both affected the games themselves, and will be an eternal legacy of both, but I am smart enough to know the difference between an event and a nation.
Also, don't waste your time trying to think on my behalf. Worry about thinking for yourself.

Its a black mark on Canada... Vancouver 2010 has been promoted as the Winter Olympics in Canada. It was pretty clear during the opening ceramonies that the whole Canada connection was primary... but hey, you might have missed the whole maple leaf thing... or the prairie thing, or the native peoples thing, or the whale thing, or the coastal thing... but some people cannot make a (good) argument... period.

I've noticed that dj_patm has not made an appearance in this thread yet so allow me to take his place as the sole voice of reason.
The weather for these olympics has been an absolute travesty and whoever is organizing this is a complete ###### for not seeing this ahead of time. Why would you put the WINTER OLYMPICS in a city that doesn't even get SNOW!? Completely stupid.
They need to move all of the venues that require snow to somewhere else immediately, or it will be the biggest black mark in the history of anything to ever happen, and the reputation of Canada will have no chance to recover.
This country has no hope if they can't even get the damn weather right.
Did Darryl Sutter organize these Olympics? Fire him.
