Default Test your Internet speed with Youtube (plus one great feature)

Not only does this test your Internet speed, but it gives you a history of your speed over time based on your Youtube usage already!

http://www.youtube.com/my_speed

My average is 10Mbps.

9.1 with a top out of ~13. We get way slower speeds here in Victoria I find.

How does this work? If I'm at school vs at home or my home in Calgary? Does it average all of these? Because my speed varies drastically with each

It probably does it based on your IP address, so if you were somewhere else it would probably give you a different graph and measurement.

Are you guys mostly running Shaw Extreme?

I don't have numbers even close to yours and am wondering why there is such a discrepancy.

Regular Shaw High speed for me, what area do you live in? If you use Shaw, I can have someone look into it.

I would need to find what node you are on. I will have to determine how to do that. I will get back to you. A friend of mine works in the NOC.

I'm somewhat surprised that youtube would stream at rates far higher than the encoded bit rate in the video. Maybe they found it wasn't worth the overhead to try and manage the stream rates and reduce their instantaneous bandwidth requirements.

I would also think this would save on bandwidth over time, since I doubt most youtube vids are watched to conclusion, there's got to be tons of client machines that make use of only a fraction of the video content they download.

Shaw gave me free xtreme this month but Youtube never provides enough bandwidth to use it all. I can download at 15MBps from Por...err...newsgroups.

Youtube gives me "January 14, 2010 to February 11, 2010 was 9.39 Mbps."
