^ I think that they eventually go to seed right, and you have to replant/replace them every year?

All the garden centers will have the herbs you mentioned come spring time.

Oregano is extremely easy to grow. It can take a lot of frost as well. I plant mine right in the ground in my garden. Come fall, I cut it off and freeze half of it as sprigs. The other half, I remove the leaves. Oregano does not have huge leaves, so I dont chop them.

Rosemary is not hard to grow either, needs a bit more sun, and can become woody. If you keep picking it, you wont have that problem. Rosemary also freezes very well. I freeze it as well come fall. Half I just pull off the leaves and freeze that way. The other half, I pull off the leaves and chop in half or thirds and then freeze.

Basil is the most tempermental of the 3 herbs you mention. It does not take to overwatering whatsoever, or cold damp nights. Basil is much more tender as well so it is best used fresh. If you do have a lot of basil, it will freeze, but wont keep its flavor as long.

If you are thinking of growing these indoors, you will have the most luck with rosemary. It grows more compact. Oregano will grow indoors but tends to be much larger. Basil is so so indoors, depending on its light conditions. It likes light, but not real strong light or not cool light.

At this time of year, you might try this. You can find fresh herbs in most of the grocery stores, that are like a little herb plant with all the roots on. Buy that and plant it indoors, should do pretty well for you since there is quite a root ball attached to those herbs.

Rosemary is an awesome plant to grow indoors. It's basically a small evergreen, and as the plant ages the limbs and bark will resemble a real tree more and more. Almost like a bonsai, if you squinted. I have a rosemary plant that is about 5 years old now, and its grown to a pretty nice size.

I tried this and it didn't work. Have you tried this successfully?

I always feel bad for those herbs, I guess I'd prefer my plants have a quick death.

I actually grew some basil from those "Fresh herb" packages from Co-op. The ones that comes with roots and dirt. I would use about half the basil, then just watered it to see if it would grow.

It took a couple of tries (I guess finding one that's still alive) but now I have way more basil then I could ever use.

I've grown it for 6 months and it's now about 3-4 feet tall.

I place the basil on my south facing window and water it everyday. It has even bloomed with flowers.

Probably going to pick up some rosemary/thyme from Golden acre or something in the summer.

Basil is well worth growing. The only problem with it is that it is incredibly susceptible to fusarium wilt. That's usually why the plants die.

Oregano is not worth growing fresh. Dried oregano is superior. This is the only herb I find where this is the case (thyme isn't too bad dried, either).

Rosemary is great to grow inside. Sunnyside brings in very nice sized rosemary plants. They might already be there.

Cilantro, italian parsley and thyme are other herbs I like to grow. Thyme you can grow outside as a perennial. Chives are great too but they can be invasive.
