Tipping Garbage Man
Do you guys tip the garbage man? I have no cash on hand and no booze...is it bad to leave out a large bag of empties? Is that bad? I figure in a day they must get a ton of empties, I hope they cash them in.
The bag I am leaving out must have about 5-10 bucks in it. I am not cheap or anything, it is just cold out and I would have to get in a car to go get them something.

I'll tip the garbage man... "lift with your legs, not your back".
And have a happy holidays.

Huh??
No... I have never ever heard of tipping your garbage man... They are City workers, don't they make enough to buy their own vice substances?... I am very sure they do alright...
... plus they are not allowed to remove anything from the trash... anything, meaning empties too The perks of being a City worker

I doubt they would have anywhere to put a big bag of empties; assuming they are allowed.
I would tape a Tim Hortons card to the top of your garbage can; in an envelope labeled for them.

Since I drive my own bagged garbage to the county dump most Saturday mornings, I'd love it if someone tipped the garbageman.
Or, should I say, in your case, Sanitation Engineer, Mobile Division.

Cow: Ask the fore(wo)man for a bonus.
In the city do we really get the same garbageman every week? Or is it a rotating shift?

Wow, I just had a flashback to a Cosby Show episode where Heathcliff was trying to leave a hot water heater out on the curb as a gift to his garbage man.
I'm with Ken0042: a gift card in an envelope taped to the top of the can is a good idea. I realize you don't want to leave your house to go get something... Did you get any gift cards you can regift to them?

Seriously? I've never tipped the garbage man in my life. Its not like they're working for minimum wage like waiters/waitresses or the newspaper boy.
.... and if you do want to tip your garbageman, I think giving them a bag of empty pop and beer cans/ bottles is kind of low class.

After tips and such waitresses are making far far far more then minimum wage and ones at bars are probably making more then the garbage men,

Which is kind of the point of tipping them.

Btw, a city garbage man (the laborer hanging on to the back of the truck) starts out at about $18 per hour.

I've never tipped a garbage man, and I'm not about to start. For some reason I've had ongoing "issues" with my garbage man. But seriously....don't people spend enough money on Christmas that we don't need to buy more gifts for people? I have no idea what my garbage man even looks like...is it even the same one every week?

The only circumstance I could fathom doing this would be if you were in a small town and you actually knew who the garbage man is/are, or you are living in some city where the garbage service is spotty and tipping is a way to try to get better service. In Calgary, odds are you've never met the guy and the one picking your garbage up at Christmas probably isn't the regular anyway.
Just out of curiousity, what other situations do you commonly tip in, and how much do you tip? Anything other than servers, barbers, taxi drivers, bellhops, and chambermaids?

So the bag of bottles went with the garbage, kinda sucked to see those go to waste!
I usually tip whenever there is an opportunity, I almost feel compelled. I also have a guilty feeling walking into a store and not buying something.

My dad always use to leave a case of beer the pickup before Christmas. But they use to take extra for him all the time so it worked out.

City of Calgary waste removal make more then any other department (roads, parks, etc) to start. They make about $18 an hour to start IIRC. Not too bad but they aren't ballin.
No need to tip and if you do they aren't supposed to accept.
