Five homes burn down in the northwest
Updated: Sat Dec. 05 2009 17:21:14
ctvcalgary.ca
Fire crews were called to a huge blaze on Citadel Forest Place N.W. around 4:00 a.m. Saturday morning and found several houses on fire when they arrived.
The homes were fully engulfed and crews had to battle adverse weather conditions just to get access to the cul-de-sac.
Five homes burned down and two more were heavily damaged.

Wow, that is awful. Right before Christmas, that would truly suck. Glad there were no deaths or injuries.

Unfortunately the snow probably cost the firefighters a lot of time and effort.

That sucks. That's the problem with cramping houses to close together. If one house is gonna go, chances are a couple others will too before the FD shows up.

not probably, it did
a fire truck got stuck in the snow, there were apparently ~4 foot high snow drifts on the roads near there, a front end loader had to come remove snow, this happened two blocks from a buddy of mine
terrible thing

Well, I guess this will now be used as an excuse for sprinkler systems.

I don't think that's up to the developers. The city zones it for a certain density don't they?

Wasn't the building code changed not that long ago? Didn't some fire rated material have to go under the beige vinyl siding that's so predominant in the Burbs?

The developers want the density. The City allows it. More Taxable Lots in less acreage. Win Win.

Sprinkler Systems should be "Minimum Code".

It was very windy, maybe we should ban that as well as banning building houses close together?

Go check it out on Streetview, the houses look as close together as your average house.
It is a bit disturbing though seeing houses and people's cars and lives that will be ruined for a long time.

There is no way that having these houses another 2-3 feet apart would have stopped this fire. The wind and road conditions played a massive part in the destruction.
Are most houses too close together? For sure. But we can't blame density everytime a fire takes out multiple houses.

Yep, fire code has indeed changed in 2009:
Quote:
New Alberta building code rules will require all new homes built from May 3 onward to feature fire-resistant walls in attached garages, the Alberta government will announce today.
But the rules will only affect new homes, not ones built before the May 3 implementation date the Stelmach cabinet approved this week.
Demanding gypsum board in attached garages helps curb one of the most common and dangerous sources of intense blazes, since the common wood-chip board walls and ceilings are fuel for fires. The approved changes will also require drywall for all parts of a vinyl-siding-clad house that are within 1.2 metres of the property line --such
as cantilevered dining rooms or fireplaces.
But since garages will re-quire not only drywall but also insulation and vapour barrier beneath, the provincial branch of the Canadian Home
Builders Association has warned the measure will affect housing affordability.
Alberta won't adopt the call for heat detectors in garages, since there aren't any on the market that will work properly in our harsh prairie winters.
|
Unfortunately, way too to address the thousands of houses that have popped up in the Burbs this last boom cycle. They'll be dealing with multi house fires forever....

Type X Gysum buys some time. But even OSB is fire rated for 30 minutes. Ideally, everything should be insulated with rock wool (e.g. Roxul) since it's basically impervious to fire.

I dislike this line of thinking. No one has ever said "It sucks my house burned down, but at least it happened in June".
