Feds vote to repeal long gun registry
http://www.calgaryherald.com/news/vo...626/story.html
I'm surprised there wasnt a thread created about this. A private members bill was passed through the house of commons abolishing the long gun portion of the registry. Handguns and Restricted weapons will still be registered.

My Dad inherited about 12 hand guns from his brother when he passed away, and a few more rifles/shot guns from the other brother when he passed away.
He has to sell 7 of the 12 hand guns because they are restricted (under 4 inches for the barrell). He never plans to fire them, he stores them legally with the trigger locks in a gun locker. He just likes to bring them out from time to time and remember how much his brother loved the guns and cleaned them daily. It is just a little piece of nostalgia for him that brings a tremendous amount of joy.
But.. he has to sell them, because he isn't allowed to own them since he didn't own them however many years ago.. he can't even get them grand fathered. It really pisses me off because it isn't even about the money, he doesn't want the money for the guns he could care less, he would give them away if he knew someone that would cherish them as much as he did. But that is the problem, no one will. I understand these gun laws are there to protect us, and I am thankful for that aspect. But in situations like these it really sucks.

Actually, handguns with a barrel length less than 4 inches (105 mm, officially) are prohibited in Canada and are illegal to own unless the owner has a grandfather clause and owned the weapon prior to firearms legislation being passed. (December 1, 1998)
Restricted firearms, including many handguns and some semi-automatic long guns, can be owned as long as the owner holds a restricted firearms permit. (they aren't that hard to get)
It's good to see that they're finally scrapping the registry for long guns though. I have no problem with a handgun registry, but making the same rules apply to hunting rifles and plinking guns was nothing more than a cash cow.

So what do they do? Just take the system offline? What do they do with all of the information collected? What happens to people who already have non-restricted firearms registered with the government if this goes through?

I had to turn in an old rifle that didn't even fire anymore when they brought this pig of a law in. It was one of the few mementos that I had from my father that meant anything, but I had to turn it in to be destroyed, or risk being caught with it. Efing Liberals.

But did they know you had it somehow? You couldn't have just kept it at home?

Yeah, I could have kept it. But lots of people knew I had it, and it was the type of thing a thief would have certainly grabbed. Plus I try to set a good example for my kids and abide by the laws the land, even if they're frickin' ######ed. Except for traffic laws. I tend to not abide by them all the time.

Yeah fair enough. I certainly understand turning it in, I don't blame you for doing that.

They will be destroying all the records that pertain to long guns. And I'm sure no one will keep a copy hidden somewhere......

Damnit, I just bought my dad a black powder rifle kit for his birthday a few weeks ago and had to pay to get it registered.
Now I'm out a few bucks.

Possessing a firearm still requires a PAL and that has nothing to do with the registry. Registering a gun is/was free and took all of 2 minutes to complete online or at a store.
Why didn't you just have the firing pin removed or filled to decommission the firearm if it was so important to you?

Thankfully this ridiculous boondoggle will soon be over. Let's hope the Senate respects the House vote and doesn't needlessly stall.

Probably because I knew nothing of the process since I'm not a hunter and wasn't aware that removing the firing pin exempted a gun from having to be registered, although I'm not sure if that's what I would have wanted to do had I known. I had always planned on restoring it to working order and passing it on. Since I'm not a hunter the gun had no practical purpose for me beyond being a keepsake. I also did not support the gun registry plan and did not wish to have my name on file with the feds as a registered gun owner when in fact I do not use a gun nor do I have a practical purpose for a gun. Whatever, I don't know why I'm explaining myself on something of a personal nature like this. There are more reasons I handled it the way I did, but I don't feel like stating them here.
Point of information ... what's a PAL?
