Heat get their first win
http://www.abbotsfordheat.com/News/H...VER42OVERMOOSE
Quote:
Leland Irving turned aside 28 shots and Jason Jaffray netted the winner in his first game back to his old stomping grounds as the Abbotsford HEAT doubled up on the Manitoba Moose 4-2 for their first ever regular season victory.
|
Quote:
"I thought our team played a really good first period for their first road game of the year," Heat head coach Jim Playfair said. And he was happy Jaffray's homecoming of sorts worked out. "I'm proud for Jaff coming back to this building and scoring a big goal for us," Playfair said. "Any time you get a first win for a franchise it's kind of special."

John Armstrong also played his first game of the season tonight. Didn't see any release that he had been sent down. Good to see him healthy though.
Also Brad Cole played as well. I thought he was supposed to be gone for quite a while?

I believe in the Jays.

I notice Backlund hasn't logged a point yet... I wonder if he's been snake-bitten or if he's just been playing poorly.

How critical is it for this team to succeed this year. I think its easy for local fans to be distrusting at the moment, especially of the enemies farm team. However, I think a good season coupled with a bit of a playoff run will excite a hockey starved Canadian community with little other entertainment. That is one thing that really stood out for me when I went there in the pre-season: the number of fans that seemed to bump into each other after not seeing each other for a few months. There is nothing like hockey in Canada to bring a commnuity together at least a couple of times a week.

Point production is a very poor way to measure how Brett is doing - it's not his game.

I'm hoping that the Heat make the playoffs this year. That added extra time for development would be a great help to the players individually.

Not sure if you are talking about that game or the season, but Sutter has 1 assist in 3 games.

i don't see how you can call Abbotsford a hockey starved community when it's less than an hour's drive from GM place. it would be like the Canucks sticking their farm team in Canmore, how successful would it be in the heart of a rival's territory?
i'm not sure what Ken King and co. were thinking with this move

I do think its funny that the moose had more people in the stands on a tuesday night game.... better than the heat on a friday and saturday.

Crazy game tonight..1-1 going into the 3rd, then the Moose score 3 to make it 4-1 and then we score 3 to tie it up.
Overtime right now.

On the positive side of things Chucko with 6 points in 4 games and Jaffray with 4 in 3 games.

I strongly disagree with your sense of time from Abby to GM Place. In order to get there in time for a game you would need to leave during rush hour. I can almost guarantee that you can't get from the boundaries of Burnaby to GM Place within an hour, let alone Port Man Bridge, Surrey etc. More comparable would actually be Red Deer who I also think could sustain an AHL team if not for the Rebels.
The enemy territory thing is going to play out and is hard to predict at the moment. Yes you have a lot of "country folk" who are die hard canucks fans, but you also have a community (and University directly adjacent) that could use some local entertainment on Weekday/Weekend evenings.
