The culture of University (Frosh)
As a residence RA/Don, we just had our first day of move in and orientation activities.
I'm going into 4th year and just discussing with our staff, we made a general blanket statement regarding the culture of the 1st year students...
When we entered, yes drinking was very much apart of the experience for students who chose to partake but no where near to the extent to what we are observing now...
Also, everyone is always whipping our the iPhone, BlackBerry's, phones and are texting non-stop.
Just a thought but I can definitely see a culture shift in my past 4 years to partying harder, mindset and priorities and technological use. I understand it is a broad statement but on the whole is what I am seeing.
Any thoughts? Maybe it's just my campus or maybe I'm just crazy.

What happened to just having a good old fashioned normal cell phone? Do kids these days really need to have 24/7 access to Facebook and Twitter? Is it really necessary to have a million apps on your phone that you will never use?
It really does bug me how obsessive this generation is getting with the whole texting/IMing thing, seems like I can't even go out for drinks with friends anymore without having to watch someone or multiple someones thumb away on their Blackberry all night.

Kids haven't changed; it's your perception of kids that change as you get older. It's been this way for thousands of years.

I remember one September driving into UWO for the first time on the 401 into London from Toronto. Every overpass had a banner thanking parents for bringing their daughters to London.
Then everyone drank some Purple Jesus, and the rest is a blur.

I honestly don't believe that the frosh are partying harder than they were before. I was a frosh back in 2000, and there is no way anyone could party anymore than we did (granted this was in Halifax).
The amount of liquor I consumed, and girls that I slayed was unreal. Probably no less, or no worse than the frosh today though.
I wish I could go back to University for two weeks. I wouldn't draw a sober breath. They should offer this as some sort of a vacation package

MJM: I just continue to keep hearing about you. Even here in Japan we hear and tell stories, sing songs and dance around a fire about your week. You ARE the man!
So say we All!

I can definitely see the texting thing. It's getting worse and worse by the day, no one even phones anymore. I hate getting texts while I'm driving; I've made the effort to buy a good headset so I can answer calls relatively safely, but no one ever phones anymore.

If its anything like my sister, this generation is extremely spoiled.
A uni student with an iPhone has some very generous parents of has gotten a sweet stuendt loan. My parents only contribute 20/month to her cell phone, the rest she has to pay out of pocket - right now that means she has a pay as you go phone from 7-11.
They of course pay for her condo rental and food since may parents make to much for her to qualify for student loans. She is lucky enough to get scholarships for UofA for 4500 - that takes care of most of her tuition, the rest my parents are paying.
Currently my parents have "debts" on us all. I am at 18K my brother at 24K my sister just starting Uni is at 0K soon to be alot though. We dont have to pay it back but it is written into the will.

People seem to forget that humans are inherently extremely social creatures.
Any technology that promotes social interaction (i.e - today's texting and twitter, yesteryears telegraph and radio) and increases its ease and integration into everyday culture is going to be adopted and used to its fullest potential (and often to its perceived detriment by older, slower adapting generations).
Clamoring for an end to this is simply delusional thinking. If anything, its going to get worse.
