Default PS3 Slim Debuts September for $299

http://ps3.ign.com/articles/101/1015007p1.html

Great news for anyone who doesn't have a PS3. For a gaming system and a Blu Ray player, this is too good to pass up. It's roughly 1/3 lighter, and uses 1/3 less power, and comes with an 120 GB HDD.

I have a feeling PS3 sales are about to shoot way, way up.

So probably $349-$399 here? It also mentions the existing models should price drop right away.

It should be $299 here as well - the bundles on BestBuy.com are the exact same price as they are here. (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....&type=category)

From another ign link @ http://ps3.ign.com/articles/101/1014844p1.html

Damn, I spent about $500 on the 120 GB HDD normal version with a couple of games not just three months ago.

Is there a company on the planet that is worse at keeping secrets? Good news for people looking to pick up a system ... that's a hell of a deal. I wonder what Microsoft's response will be with the 360? Will they price cut too?

Especially since it's $399 already.

They already did, $299 as well. Doesn't take effect until end of August though.

Soooo, anyone want to buy my 60GB fat ps3? The fan is loud as hell.

Interesting new look. I'm hoping for rear USB though. Other than no front panel display it's the best Blu-ray player on the market still and this will nicely fit in the bedroom to replace the BDPS3600 I'm not overly happy with.

That's for the pro though isn't it? The elite is still $399. I'm surprised that of the top of the line models, sony now has the cheaper unit. I can't imagine that being the case for very long.

That's for the Elite. The Pro is gone. Arcade is still around.

Wouldn't the PS3 be a way better deal either way if both systems were the same price. Doesn't PS3 have wireless, bluetooth, HDMI, free PSN and a whole bunch of other stuff bundled that the xbox doesnt?

PS3 system software update version 3.00
Concurrently with the release of new PS3, system software will be upgraded to version 3.00 on September 1. The update adds various user-friendly features such as the “What’s New” screen, where users can quickly browse the new items available in PlayStation Store as well as their recently played games directly on the XMB™ (XrossMediaBar), with short cuts to each piece of content. PS3 will evolve continuously with the system software updates, further improving the operability and enhancing the user experience available through the network. PS3 owners will be able to enjoy new features by simply updating the PS3 system software to version 3.00 via the “System Update” function on the XMB*3.

BRAVIA® Sync™ Feature
The new PS3 system is also equipped with the BRAVIA® Sync™ feature. By connecting the new PS3 system and a BRAVIA TV with the HDMI cable, users are able to directly operate the XMB on PS3 using the TV remote control. Other functions include “System Standby” that will automatically turn off the PS3 system when the BRAVIA TV is turned off*4.

“Vertical Stand” for new PS3 (CECH-2000 series)
By utilizing the separately sold “Vertical Stand”, users will be able to set the new PS3 in vertical position*5, making it easier to place the PS3 system anywhere at home. The vertical stand will become available in Japan on September 3, 2009, at a RRP of 2,000 yen (including tax) and in North America at US$24*6.

Removal of “Install Other OS” feature
The new PS3 system will focus on delivering games and other entertainment content, and users will not be able to install other Operating Systems to the new PS3 system.
Along with a vast line-up of attractive and exciting entertainment content with the new PS3 system, SCE will continue to further expand the PS3 platform and create a new world of computer entertainment.

Wireless - yes

Bluetooth - yes

HDMI - they both have it now

Free PSN - Yes

Whole bunch of other stuff - Can't think of much else

The 360 still has an hdmi cable included, as well as a headset that the ps3 does not.

They are actually much closer than they used to be. I feel personally that the ps3 was the better deal when the 360 was missing some key features included (wireless controller, hdmi). Now that those features are included, I feel the gap has shrunk a bit.

So you're saying that both the xbox and PS3 have all of those things?

I REALLY hope that this feature also relates to the older systems. I don't think I'll purchase a new PS3, so it would be nice if this worked on the older systems.

Sorry, what I meant by "yes" is that you are correct. The ps3 has wireless, bluetooth and free online while the 360 does not. Both however do have hdmi (the latest 360 of course, the one that is apparently replacing the 360 pro at the end of the month).
