Oilers/Predators strike deal
Pending a league conference call, the Edmonton Oilers and Nashville Predators have hooked up for a trade this evening. Heading to Nashville is goal tender Mike Smith and the Columbus Blue Jackets 1st round pick in next years entry draft. Coming back to Edmonton is Chris Osgood and the St.Louis Blues 2nd round pick in the upcoming draft and a few dollars to cover some of the salary difference.
With the new SIM and the really higher priority on a good rated starting goalie, we decided to make the sacrifice to get better at the position right now. As much as many love to hack on Osgood and myself included, he's won two Stanley Cups and nearly won a third this past spring. He was a pretty key guy on that run too as he played his best hockey in the playoffs (how many times did he let the Hawks light him up for 5 goals, mr 75 overall over rated michelan man????!!!!). The Red Wings will always be awesome and Osgood is signed to play there for two more years. Having an 81 OV goalie gets us closer to the top teams in our conference at the position, and we still have Rinne as insurance at the position.
My disasterous Luongo deal looks like this now
Luongo
for
Osgood
Suter
Oshie
2nd St.Louis 09
Of course the key is Luongo is 4 points higher and will play for another 20 years. Osgood will only last two more. But Oshie and Suter should last almost as long as Luongo will.
The Preds get a lot younger at the position, and Smith should emerge as a good starter for them. It's always tough to speculate exactly where another teams pick will fall, but it would seem to reason that the Preds will get a good pick out of this that could be 40-50 picks earlier than the St.Louis 2nd. They also save a few dollars to help round out their roster for this year.
