Depends on the phone I think. I know my phone I can use Audacity ( http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) to crop an mp3 file to use as a ringtone, then save it as a .3g2 file and I'm good to go.

its on a mac .... what happened last time ( or what i remember ) is i found the file in itunes.... i would go to File>Get Info>Options... then i would put the start of the ringtone time and the end of the time in the start and end boxes. I would then drag the file to my desktop . CLick on the file on the desktop and save it as a .M4R and drag it back to Itunes. It was supposed to show up under the ringtone tab. Then i go back and change the settings of the original song on itunes...

if you have garage band, you can just drag the song in to garageband and cut it down there and export it back to itunes as a ringtone.

Weird, I know I've done it with a song I bought on iTunes.
Edit: I guess it wasn't protected as it was older. Tired a new one and it didn't work.

Can't find the link, but I've added the missing steps in for you (check the bold parts of the quote above).
Edit: If "Create AAC version" doesn't show up, just edit your "Import Settings" in the iTunes preferences, and select the AAC encoder.

Nope, doesn't even install, just runs as an exe.

If you are using Garageband to do this, you need the latest version. My work Mac has the 2007 version and the "save as ringtone" "share as ringtone" option doesn't work. My Mac at home on the other hand that runs the latest version of garageband does have the option.
