Default Windows update problem

Hi I shut my laptop off last night and it automatically started to install some updates and now it won't finish installing. It keeps restarting and screen shows "configuring update 3" but the percentage complete stays at 0 percent. Then it will restart and keep doing the same thing. Anybody know what this could be? Sorry but I'm using my iPod touch to type. Thanks.

Same thing happened to me so I've been on my backup computer for a couple of days.

What I just did was to insert my Windows Vista disc but first I had to go into my bios to change my boot up order to my DVD to boot first as somehow it got changed. I went through the install procedure until I got to options to repair or use system restore. I used system restore to go back to the 22nd of June and now it's working although not as well as it should.

I also did the windows update and it went well this time. It seems to be a problem when it updates when it is shutting down and than on restarting it, so I reset update to only notify me and not install. I'll do it myself from now on. Hope this helps.

You're welcome and it appears Windows is installing updates whether we want them or not. Also

Livingston thinks that the surprise installs were due a problem with Microsoft's server capacity, which in turn may have resulted in some downloads failing before they were finished.

With other software when they start forcing crap on me and I can't even control my own damn computer, I un-install it. Damn.

I had a set of a couple or 3 updates that would not ever install (manually or through windows automatic update) on my Vista laptop. I just avoided rebooting and turned off automatic updates until I finished school, where I wiped it and put Windows 7 on it.

Be careful of articles from The Inquirer. They have been known to have some inflammatory reporting. I've seen them referred to as the TMZ or Perez Hilton of tech reporting. (Although linking to the originating article, this story looks legit) http://windowssecrets.com/2009/06/25...without-asking

Yeah, I was just a little angry because this is the second time it's happened in the last couple of months to my computer. The first time it took me a while to figure our what to do as I'm one of those people kids around here complain about, having to fix their old parents computers.

I was going to try booting up with my Vista disk like you said Vulcan but I figured I'd try turning my laptop on once more. What do you know, the Windows Startup Recovery or something came up and it asked if I wanted to use system restore. After a few attempts it finally loaded Windows and I was able to get back into my account. It says that system restore didn't work but everything seems to be back to a point before the weekends windows update. Anyways, thanks for your suggestion.
