XBOX 360 Hard Drive or DVD Drive Problem
I'll try to keep this fairly short, since I have no clue why my XBOX suddenly sucks.
It broke last October, got it fixed, they replaced my DVD drive because the serial # is the same as before. Now I get disc errors, like "Disc is dirty, please clean with dry cloth, etc." Even if the game is brand new I still get the error, which forces me to save them to my 20 g harddrive which can only hold 2 games. Today I tried to save Tiger Woods 09 to my hard drive and it wouldn't even start, it would give me the same old disc error message.
My question is will MS fix this? and is the problem the Hard Drive or the DVD Drive?
BTW i quickly tried the game without the drive and i got the same error.

Its the dvd drive try this this, go to Console Settings, Memory, then press Y for Device Options and press - X,X,LB,RB,X,X - the xbox will ask you if you would like to perform a system maintenance and you say yes. This will erase all game updates you have downloaded but you can get them back. If this doesnt work you gotta replace the drive. IF your still under the 1 year warranty they should replace it.

If it's out of warranty and the system maintenance fix doesn't work you can also try what I did and open up the DVD drive and clean the lens with rubbing alcohol. Since then not once have I got a read error.

How exactly do you do that, and if you do it does it void your warranty (for 3 red rings, which I assume i'm still under warranty for)

There's specific tools you can buy to do it. And yes, it does void your warranty. My three year extended warranty ran out though so it was either pay Microsoft $100 to fix it or try and fix it myself.

This is the reason I barely buy any games for 360 anymore. Some games you wouldn't experience any freezes and others would be almost unplayable. Oblivion was a nightmare, you could hear the disc drave stop and then would have to try and save your game before the dirty disc error message appeared.

I'm probably going to try to clean the DVD lens today, because the problem is most likely the DVD drive, and if it doesn't fix it, I'll leave Tiger Woods 09 alone and play the console out until it breaks, and then I'll just get a core.

if you're still under warranty for the 3 red rings you should do your best to make it happen(minimize air flow for the fan and overheat it) and ship it to them.

Talk to Microsoft first before trying to open it. I only opened it after I phoned Microsoft to see if I could extend my warranty another three years and was told because my three year extended warrenty had expired last July that if I needed it repaired I would have to pay $100 to get it fixed and then I would be able to extend it since all repaired 360s come with a one year warrenty.

I'll call them today maybe, it's just that the console works, its just the DVD drive that is broken or dirty

Did you try kukkudo's solution in the first reply. I remember there being issues with NHL09 and the doing what Kukkudo said ended the scratch disk error...

Yea that fixed NHL 09, but i just stuck a piece of paper in the dvd drive while the game was in, and tried to save it to my hard drive and gave the xbox a push as it loaded the game and it worked, so I guess I'll live with it for now. And probably get a core or arcade in the fall so that I don't have to worry about saving games to my hard drive.
The fans are a lot louder now though, it might have been just because I was saving the game, but the XBOX didn't get any hotter than usual, so I hope I didn't break the fans when I opened it.
