Default Mustang vs Camaro vs Challenger

2010 Shelby GT500

The muscle behind the New 2010 Shelby GT500 is a supercharged and intercooled 5.4-liter 32-valve V8 engine that’s capable of delivering 540 horsepower and 510 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is mated to a quick-shifting and smooth Tremec 6-speed manual transmission. SVT performance-tuned suspension components, unique 18-inch bright machined-aluminum wheels with SVT center cap (convertible) or 19" premium painted wheels (coupe), and sport bucket seats with leather seating surfaces are additional features that push this spectacular vehicle to the forefront of the herd.

I watched the Koni Grand Am Sports Car race at Watkins Glen NY, on tv this weekend. Saw lots of Mustangs... not one Camaro or Challenger though.

My friends dad just got the new Shelby GT500 and a Ford GT. Both are incredible vehicles.

I have to say, I like the Shelby more though.

I would be surprised if either Dodge or Chevrolet had much for racing teams in light of their "bail-out" situations.

Put me down for the Mustang, always been a Ford fan.

the Challenger is the only thing Chrysler has going for it at the moment, amazing car. it's what the Charger SHOULD have been

Agreed! They had an opportunity with the Charger to continue momentum created with the 300, they failed miserably.

I think there was an article to that effect somewhere...

Mustang for the win, Chrysler can go south of the earths crust as far as I'm concerned.

I've driven an '09 Shelby, had to change my shorts afterward. They were sticky ... the dealership wouldn't let me drive the '10 though. Unfortunately I can't afford a car payment that is more than my house payment, so my '03 GT will have to do for now. The 2010 GT500KR is absolutely STUNNING in person.

The Challenger is a gorgeous car as well, and I'd kill somebody for one ... not too hot on the new Camaro, though.

I love the Ford GT ... but there's no way in hell I'd ever be able to afford one. The wheels will look great on my car though

I think if you get rid of Brand bias the Challanger is the best looking Muscle car being made right now. They got it perfect. The camaro I think would have been good had it been released 2 years ago to me it already looks a little dated.

This may emasculate some of you--after what I said about Lime Bud Light (still tastes girly to me)--but not knowing anything about the cars in particular, nor having even sat in any, I like the Mustang. It looks sexy hot.

with unlimited money the camaro wins (not to mention the fact that the v6 'maro has almost as much horsepower as the mustang gt). that being said, i love the body style on the challenger, too bad the charger is stuck as a 4 door family wagon, no cool, new general lee clones to come out.

the shelby gt 500KR does kick serious ass, but no one will know what it is unless they are a serious car person...ive seen v6 'stangs with a queer hood and decal kit, but the camaro turns heads every time, the mustangs 'vintage' appeal has worn out, the challenger is just too elephantine to compete (it weighs as much as an f150 for craps sake). the camaro was, is, and always will be the best in the pony car battle.

In order to compare, you have to compare apples to apples.....the Shelby is NOT part of this group, the Regular V-8 Mustang GT would be the camaro/Challenger competition. The Shelby would be more inline with the Corvette Z06/Challenger SRT or the Z-28 Camaro (if they ever make it) which will have the ZR1/CTS-V drivetrain in it.

In the new pony car segment, best bang for your buck definitely goes to the Camaro....426 HP, IRS, Decent interior and good looks. I really like the Challenger style, its a classic, the most retro of all 3....but it pretty much fails in everything else. Its to heavy, to big, the R/T version is low on HP...but it is definitely classy.
The V-8 mustang GT almost gets beat out the the 305 HP V-6 camaro, and gets demolished by the LS-3 V-8 camaro. Though the price is nice on the mustang.....
All in all I would have to say that the camaro leads the pack in the 'new' ponycar segment....

Ford definitely has fallen being in the pony car race based on horsepower alone. However, that will be remedied in the 2012 model year with a 400+ horsepower GT. The Camaro is very fast, but I agree with GGG in that it looks a bit dated already. Of the three, I think the Challenger looks the best.

I disagree with lucky that the Shelby is is more inline with a Z06 'Vette. The Z06 runs between 75 and 80 grand at any dealearship that I've seen - the Shelby GT500 books in about 45. The GT500KR is a match for the 'Vette in price - although the two I've seen were not legal for sale yet(Had big NOT STREET LEGAL, NOT FOR LEGAL SALE stickers in the windows.)

I have an amusing story about a Z06 'Vette and a police officer

I would take another Challenger in a heart beat. We bought a brand new Challenger when they came out, in 1970. 340, 4 barrel, 4 speed stick shift, God that was a beauty of a car and it drove like stink. PLUS, great gas mileage for a car like that, it averaged around 30 mpg. As my husband became more involved in the oil patch and more conservative in his ways, the color purple no longer appealed to him and he had it repainted it that deep British racing green.

When we bought it, we paid $3000 for it, and that was brand new price. We never had kids then and we took that car everywhere, was the only vehicle we had at that time. We got some looks when we were driving down the forestry trunk road and going camping with that vehicle.

yeah, I'll give you the price comparo, but for the same reason you cannot lump the Shelby in with the camaro....and, the shelby books in at $54,300, not 45.....you can get a discounted 09 (if there's any left) for around 49K but you are not going to touch a 2010 shelby at 45...

0-60 times, of course they vary by tester, but the Shelby has a poor 0-60, but good trap speeds...

Shelby 0-60 - 4.6 seconds
Camaro 0-60 - 4.7 seconds

100 hp in difference, almost identical 0-60 times....if ford had put an independant rear suspension in that shelby, it would have been a really great car. I love the shelby, but it wouldnt have been my first choice.....alot of HP, no way to hook it up....
You could buy a 1ss camaro for around 40k, another 8K for a supercharger, and absolutely kill the shelby.....
