You Edmonton guys love your hurdles meet. Let me just say from experience living here in Japan that when I say that I'm from Calgary, they instantly say - "ahh, that's where the Olympics were held" - if they're not so young that they weren't around. It is a big deal - not because of how many Laplanders tune into biathalon - but because the Olympics has a brand that bestows prestige UPON a city. You chuck posters are trying to BESTOW an event with the same kind of prestige and it just doesn't work outside of the city limits of the chuck. Sorry.

Oh, and in the locked thread Sundeep said that the fringe in Edmonton is the world's biggest - Edinbourough's actually is, but it's still a good festival.
That's very true regarding the olympics. I didn't read the threads where Sundeep claimed the winter olympic was a non-entity, but I would have responded earlier. The Winter Olympics is a huge deal in Europe. How do I know? Because I was in England, and France during the 88 olympics. The media exposure was incredible. That's how I heard about Calgary. Yup, that's right...and I wasn't even living in Calgary yet. I didn't come to Calgary until summer of 1990.

...Yup, and I mentioned Canada and some European countries. Other than that, it isn't very popular (only 60-70) countries participate in them.

In any event, they are behind the IAAF World Track and Field Championships (over 200 countries participating) in television ratings....by a larger margin.

Absolutely incorrect. It's Edmonton and Canada where Track isn't very popular. On the international scale, The World's are highly popular, more so than the Winter Olympics.

So what would you rather have? Something that is important internationally (track meet), or something that is typically identified with Canada and its inhabitants (winter sports)?

What do you think the City of Edmonton would go after if they had the choice....?

You keep saying this, Sundeep. How about some real, concrete proof. Better yet go to West Edmonton Mall and ask 20 people if they have heard of the IAAF World Track and Field Championships or the Winter Olympics. I'd bet the farm that more than half would say thay know about the Winter Olympics but have no clue about the track meet.

lol, I lived half my life in asia (Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and brunei) and I've never heard of the IAAF World Track and Field Championships. I've also lived in Europe (England, and france) on and off for a total of a year and I've never heard of the IAAF World Track and Field Championships. The only reason I knew about the IAAF was because I participated in track and field events in High School.

The amount of countries that participate doesn't always necessarily correlate with how well known it is. Besides, the representatives from the IAAF themselves acknowledge that it wasn't until recently did they receive a wider international recognition.

There were 22 thousand empty seats at that track meet every day. If it was such a big deal, why didn't more people show up?

Sundeep is the guy that was proclaiming Edmonton as a centre for high fashion, because they wear Diesel and a bunch of other over priced merchandise. He was making fun of Calgary handing out white Cowboy Hats to the Flames players after the brilliant cup run. Even the people at Oilfans were embarrased of his comments.

Looks like a bunch of people watched the games from France...but not so much when in Edmonton.

Dunno how to break down this data myself.

FMonte Carlo - The IAAF has been encouraged by some of the early TV broadcast data for 2003 World Championships in Athletics supplied to them by Sponsorship Intelligence, a specialist research company.

With the World Championships taking place in Paris, primary, dedicated broadcasts for the 2003 World Championships drew an average rating of 5.6 on France TV, which was 3.5 times better than that achieved in 2001, when the competition was held in Edmonton, Canada, but also up 33% on French broadcasts for the 1999 edition hosted in Seville, Spain.riday 5 September 2003

LOL, he also keeps mentioning that the Winter Olympics has only 70-80 countries participating...well, I dunno much, but 70-80 countries that participate in a "winter" sport is pretty good. Are there even 70-80 winter nations?? Why would a nation participate if they don't even have snow?

Anyway, back to the topic at hand.

So we're including players of the past? That's kind of a weird thing to do, unless you have access to a time machine or something...

The Winter Olympics had 2.1 billion viewers.

In the 1999 World's, there, were 4 billion viewers.

I read it with my own eyes.....

...because Track is not very popular in Canada.

41K average attendance for 10 days is alot...in Canada.

Internationally, Track gets sold out....
