The [Prototype] Thread
Well, the game came out today. After much debate about Prototype vs. Infamous, I went ahead and got Infamous.
From the videos I saw, this games looks really good (infact I think it looks better than Infamous). I wanted to get people's opinions before I go out and spend more money on another open world action game.
IGN scored this version at a 7.5. This is a pretty big disappointment in my books.
How is it?

I have both... obviously played a lot more of Infamous than Prototype, but so far at least...
Infamous >>>>>>> Prototype
Not even close. Prototype has poor, confusing controls, mediocre graphics, and surprisingly not that exciting combat so far. I'm not writing it off totally yet, but it isn't coming across as a super quality game to me yet.
Basically, you can clearly tell which one was made by an experienced developer with a ton of pedigree and which one was made by a developer who specializes in average kids and licensed games.

downloaded Prototype for the PC, and i think it's every bit as good as Infamous. both have their strengths and weaknesses, both have a little too much repetition, but i don't understand why review sites are ragging on one but not the other (my suspicion is that it's because Prototype came out second). i love the feeling of power you get from Prototype, and getting around the map is a lot faster. playing it with a 360 control on my PC and i think the controls are fine once you get used to them. i've also experience no glitches in my 15 or so hours in the game, and that's very rare for a console port for the PC
the biggest difference i've noticed between the two games is that Prototype seems more geared for the longtime gamers, while Infamous caters to the casual crowd (it has a lot more hand holding than Prototype). depends on what you're looking for, but i think both are great games

Having not played it, only seen videos/reviews, I would say don't get it.
I was going to pre-order it, but I am glad I didn't. I don't see it as being one of those games you play a lot. By this I mean you will beat it once, screw around for a day or two, then it goes on the shelf, and it never sees the light of day again.
I say wait until price drop.

Yeah, this is really tough. I've read so many mixed things from "this game is horrible" to "this game is a lot of fun". I just want to get it because it's $49.99 right now which is a pretty good price. I mean for those that want, and have the time to beat it within a week, you could buy it, beat it, and then trade it in a Futureshop for $40 store credit. I guess I could do that provided I find time to play it in the near future.

If you like open world then the best buy deal is good. Price match at future shop to get it for $42.49. Then finish it ans sell it.

Rented Prototype this weekend and have about 10-15 hours into it. Really enjoying it. It feels a lot like GTA but with flying and better weapons. I can see there being repetition but I am still getting used to the upgrades so even if it is the same fight you can do it differently. metacritic had it at 82 I think. I am enjoying it a lot. We'll see after a few more days though.

Are the graphics as bad as people claim they are? Most particularly how is the draw distance? From what I've read this game has an orb system similar to Crackdown but it's hard to see the orbs from a distance because the draw distance is so poor.

Not sure what those terms mean.
The graphics seem fine to me. Some of the features are not as detailed as they might be and his hands seem really big, for example, but the landscape and buildings all look really nice, again, to me.
Very GTA in my opnion, but better.

I traded this game in. I wrote my initial impressions about 2 hours in.
This game sucks. Honestly, it's horrible. It gives you the illusion of combat being varied because of different styles, but you just really stick with one move. The targeting system is bad, the graphics are UNFORGIVABLE. The draw distance some times can't even pull orbs when they are across the street at times.
There is NO CHANCE that this game even compares with GTA. This game is repetitive and annoying, with a lackluster story.
Rent at best, but I'd avoid at all costs.

Just to clarify I compare it to GTA in style, general gameplay and graphics. Not a comment on the entirety of the game per se.

I didn't mean to sound grumpy, but I still disagree.
GTA oozes style, the graphics are gorgeous (Prototype looks slightly better then San Andreas), and GTA gameplay is fun and varied.
If you want to buy a superhero game, play Wolverine. That game wicked fun.

I think GTAs graphics are blurry at best, but that's just from a PC perspective. The game hogs resources like a but really doesn't give that much back.
Prototype on the other hand, runs like a full dream with everything cranked and Vsync on, and is a fun if you just enjoy mayhem and violence.
The model textures on the other hand could be far better, and more varied. Lots of clones. Someone lazied that one up.

Still playing.
I am a little pissed that I earned all these weapons and then lose them half way through the game. I think that is a lazy ass way to extend the game.
Still enjoying it but can certainly see the argument that it becomes redundant.

The PC port of GTA IV was not optimized well at all. The sheer scale and view distance though is amazing. Are you able to max the game out? I don't really notice any blur when I run it.
