Default Excel

Hey gang, I have an excel question I need help with (I consider myself somewhere between beginner and intermediate so this might be a stupid question).

I'm doing a pool with some buddies and inputting all the results into an Excel sheet to keep track. Various stat categories have different point values. As an example using basketball: points are worth 1, rebounds/assists 2, blocks/steals 3 etc.

(So there'd be stat categories across the top, players name down the side, and that repeated for each game, with each person's entry on seperate excel sheets.)

I wanted to have the columns that require multipliers programmed in so that when I input a players totals, it automatically calculates it. The problem is that I get a 'circular logic' error because I'm basically saying Cell A1 times 2 = Cell A1.

So I realize that the two easiest solutions would be 1) just join online pools that calculate all this for you (not an option for this particular group for various reasons) and 2) to just do the calculations in my head and input the answer without asking Excel to do anything, but I could see other applications for this where the calculations mightn't be so easy (multiplying by fractional numbers for example) and am just curious if there is a way to do this and thought someone here might know. I didn't find Microsoft's office help to be of much use.

I think that you are more looking for an if Statement but perhaps you could give more detail as to what cell A1 is and why you are trying to make A1=A1*2

So each office pool entry would have an Excel worksheet that looks like this:

Game 1 Points Rebounds Assists Blocks Steals Turnovers

Player 1
Player 2
Player 3
...
Player 10

and then repeated for subsequent games

So I'm trying to figure out how to automatically have excel multiply actual stats into fantasy points (10 blocks = 20 fantasy points as a simple example).

tabulate each column individually. and total the results.

Hide the individual results columns if you need to.

yes, i think you need to have a final tally in the next row and just make it =A1+A2*2+A3*2.....

When I kept track via Excel, I had one page where I would enter the player's stats, then I would create another worksheet where I would put the poolie's team and reference the "Input" sheet

But that was a pool where a player could be picked by multiple teams. So I would update a player's stats in one place and the changes would be reflected on everyone's score.

Hey,

I thought I would bumb this thread instead of start a new one. I do the stats for the softball team and enter it all in excel. How could I get it so that I could sort by the different stat category?

This is what it looks like right now

Select all (Ctrl + A), then hit sort, select "my selection has header row
" and then pick whatever stat you want to sort by.

You could also create a macro so that when you click on a certain cell it will sort the corresponding column... that would take too long to explain but if you sent it to me I could help you out with it

No worries, it was very easy once I realised exactly what you wanted. Just press a few buttons. You may notice I had to change the format a bit as the auto filter won't work with the spaces in between your columns and rows.
