Canada's Privacy Office on "Deep Packet Inspection"
Just to set this up, Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) is a tool used to look at internet traffic. It can be used to "throttle" (slow down) certain types of traffic, such as bit torrent traffic, or give priority to other types of traffic (like Voice over IP, VOIP). It has also been used to track individual users and then target ads to those specific users.
The Privacy Office has set up a website to offer up opinions on this topic. I find this an interesting move, especially since the CRTC is holding hearings right now regarding whether or not regulation of the major Internet Service Providers (Bell, Telus, Shaw Rogers, etc.) is required and what the rules should be going forward.
If you have any opinions on this, be sure to let your MPs know where you stand.
I'm not a big fan of more regulation, but in my opinion it is a far lesser evil than having my traffic snooped, shaped, replaced or tracked.
