Default Shaw Digital Receiver to Mac

I'm heading to Arizona on Friday and will miss the first couple games of the playoffs. I don't want to risk not finding the games at a pub so I was hoping to connect my digital receiver to my iMac and then access my Mac from my laptop while in Arizona.

2 questions:

1) Is it possible to do this?

2) What programs would I need to do this?

Any help from the CP brain-trust would be appreciated.

It might be possible with the right hacks, and it certainly is not supported by Shaw. I made a post about this a couple years back and got some response. I never followed up on it though, since I moved out of town and lost my PVR.

This is the link to the thread I made : http://forum.calgarypuck.com/showthr...er+computer%27

Edit: ok I just realized you were not talking about a PVR, but a normal digital reciever.

There are 2 options,

1) a SlingBox, which allows you to watch your TV through any internet connection. The SOLO costs about 200 bucks I think, I have never investigated them thoroughly though.

2) Or you what you could do, to save a bit of cash is use a video capture card to get the stream onto your computer and then access your computer, through something like Hamachi to access the stream there. There might be a good program that allows you to do this easily, or you might be able to use a DVR client, like MythTV, to do it for you. The card you can get as low as $45, everything else is free for personal use. It would essentially be a sling box for 45 bucks depending on the control you could get of the DVR software across the network (maybe remote desktop log in?). If you could solve the software part of this I would be very interested in how it works out.

"buy" a damn... what are those called that allow you to access your home tv over the internet?
Jim Rome has them as sponsors?????

Anyway, "buy" it then when you are back well within the store's return policy discover that it does not meet your needs.

Damn, what is that thing called?

Slingbox.

That was the plan if this didn't pan out. It might end up being easier.

The only reason I have not tried this is I would not be able to return it and then I would have to get a divorce and then my kids would hate me...You know how it goes!!

Good luck.

I bought a Slingbox a few months ago (mostly so we could watch TV on our kitchen computer without running cables).

It has come in handy on several occassions - including our Trip to SD when I was able to watch 3 or 4 Flames games on my laptop (not the best video, but better than nothing).

I think that the Slingbox was $300 (I got the type that has its own cable input).

Why not sign up for NHL GameCentre Live? The online feed quality is really quite good this year.

Worst case, a Canadian team is definitely going to be on CBC, and you can watch the CBC hockey feeds live online too. They are small screen, but if you hold down the Control key on the Mac and roll your scroll wheel on your mouse, you can zoom in and make it fill the screen. Then , you just have to sit far back or scrunch up your eyes to make it look a little less blocky
