Default Want! (1TB Crazy Fast Storage)

I would almost pay $1500 for this.

OCZ Z Drive 1TB plugs into PCI Express x4 slot and features four 256GB multi-level cell (MLC) flash-based SSDs in RAID mode, which ensures read speed of up to 600MB/s and write speed of up to 500MB/s (sustained rates should be lower). Besides, to ensure blazing speed, the Z Drive sports 256MB of ECC DDR2 memory local cache.

When do you think they will have a TB on a MicroSD?

load times for games would almost be non-existent. nice to know PC makers are heading in this direction

edit: though i would only purchase one if it were John Mayer approved

SATA theoretical is 1.5Gb/s, SATA2 is 3.0Gb/s

However normal hard drives don't even approach those levels, even the fastest desktop drives are only in the 100 to 150 MB/s range of speed max.

Oops hit post.. So this unit would be 6 times faster than the fastest desktop drives, add in access times of 0.1ms compared to 10+ms on a normal drive, and these things are FAST.

Insane! Seeing this makes me think Ray Kurzweil is right, I doubt 15-20 years ago tech nerds thought we could get speeds like that available to the consumer this fast.... or that we would even need it.

The price isn't that bad when you consider the speed.

I have a 4.5TB disk array (15x300 GB) hooked with 4 loops of fibre channel to my work PC and that has a read/write speed of about 750/700 MB/s. I assure you this costs a damn sight more than $2K. Considering this thing is not all that far off that in terms of performance ( not to mention it plugs into a PCIe slot whereas my storage is so heavy it takes two people to lift it ) that's great performance to price ratio.

The article says the performance number it gives are not sustained speeds, so I assume those speed are from when you're working from the cache. So the biggest concern I'd have with it is how much of that speed is coming from the cache and what kind of speed do you get once you blow through it?

What the heck do you need that kind of array for BlackEleven?

Good question!

On a similar note, here's 24 SSDs connected to get a 2GB/s transfer rate!

I develop software for a company that makes products for high end special effects and video editing. I need to be able to playback multiple streams of uncompressed HD video in real time (24 fps), which takes about 200MB/s per stream.

Ok, on a hypothetical, how much would a system with and the hardware to completely utilize it's capabilities cost? Just curious... for now...
