Default How To Back-up iPod on New Computer?

I have an 80 GB iPod Classic (11,000 songs). I manually moved songs to the iPod from iTunes (almost all of it from cds I own).

Now I have a new computer with a 500 GB hard-drive, and want to back up all my music. iTunes does not let you do this kind of thing.

Any advice?

MediaPilot has a slick backup feature that lets you backup all of your ipod music to a single location on your hard drive

iPod Copy Expert

Is there any free software that does this?

What I did is freeze iTunes on your new computer (open iTunes, open Preferences menu and leave that open). The iPod does NOT connect to iTunes and then treated my iPod as any other USB device.

Manually transferred all the data off my iPod onto my hard-drive.

Granted this keeps the music unsorted, but you can quickly put it all back in iTunes and all is well in the world.

This process took a couple hours for my 30 GB iPod.

I know rhythmbox does it, but this is probably not the ideal solution for you since its a linux app. It's prebundled with Ubuntu so if you get desperate enough you can download the live CD and boot from it, then use rhythmbox from there. Sorry I can't be more help than that. Maybe someone else will have a better solution for you.

Can you not just use Sharepod --http://www.getsharepod.com/ and skip Itunes all together.

SharePod 3 is a huge leap ahead of the previous 2.x versions! Here are some of the main features:

- Redesigned interface
- Track tag editing
- Video import support
- iPod Shuffle support
- Drag and drop tracks to Explorer
- Playlists and ratings transferred to iTunes
- Completely rewritten codebase to safely import files to your iPod
- Play Count, Last Played Date support

I'm on a Mac and I use Senuti as well, but here's a really useful tip: whatever file transfer program you pick, keep a copy of the install file on your iPod. That way, no matter what computer you connect to, you have the software you need onhand to connect and transfer music to and from your computer.

Sharepod worked great. It was free, and all my music is backed-up. It took about 90 minutes to back-up 11,000 songs.
