Default My TV just died...

So I'm watching TV tonight when the screen goes funny and I hear this noise like a propeller plane taking off! It's a 61" Samsung DLP, and is about 4.5 years old. My guess is the DLP wheel is somehow making that noise. Anyone have any idea if these TV's are worth fixing? Or should I go TV shopping tomorrow?

The light bulb just exploded. Your lucky, your DLP lasted 4.5 years! My bulb lasted less than a measly 2 years. To replace a bulb it is around $200 (it was for me). Depending on the tv the bulb may be more. Depends on what you want, if it is a good tv, then replace the bulb, if it is old (which is seems) and you want a new one, then buy a new one.

If the colour wheel was knocked out of place, there would still be an image, the colours would just be off, unless you tackled the thing NFL style.

Hmmm.. well there is still an image, but like you said the colors are off.. and that horrible noise. I didn't tackle it - but I'd like to! If it was the bulb, would there be any picture at all?

You are looking around $300 for someone to come to your house and fix it if its the colour wheel. If you are handy a colour wheel costs about $125 and you can do it yourself.

Ok, well for me when my bulb died (exploded actually), it made a big popping sound. Like if you were to step on a light bulb. Except when you look inside, the bulb is fine, the filament just exploded, or what ever the twirly thing is.

If it made a different sound then it is something else. Since you say there is still picture I would assume the bulb is NOT dead, because it would just be a black screen (like mine was). If the colour wheel was knocked out of place just slighly, then the picture would be good for the most part, it is just when looking at it from an angle that it would look weird. If it looks funny straight on, then it is more major. I have no experience with the colour wheel so I can't help you. But if I were you, I would buy a new tv. They are pretty cheap now for a good one, compared to what they were (like when I bought mine ).

Oh, and I just had a question, is the sound it is making constant, or just when you first noticed it. If it is constant, the wheel is either completely EFFed, or there is a bigger problem.

The loud airplane propeller sound is constant as soon as the TV is turned on. Funny thing is now it shuts itself down and flashes the lamp light on the power button. So it would seem that it's a lamp issue, but I still have a picture!

I went out and bought a new TV yesterday... nice 52" 120 Hz Samsung LCD. Nice TV. So now that my old DLP has been dragged down to the basement, I'm still wondering if it can be fixed. Does anyone know if when the bearing in the color wheel goes, does it make a loud propeller sound?

Well since you bought a new tv, it wouldn't hurt to at least open the DLP up and take a look around. See if anything has fallen out of place, or see if anything looks broken. Take pictures, maybe someone will know what is up.
