Default Decent Blog

I'm traveling for the next year or two and I'm looking for a blog to write about things for my family and friends. I want a blog with no max character count or at least a high one, and uploading photos and videos would be nice too, so that everything could be in one place. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Blogger.com is an easy to use blogging site.

Live Journal is ok too.

Facebook does all the things you need as well. It my not look like a blog but it's an effective site for keeping in contact with people while you travel. You can write notes about your trip and post photos and video.

I haven't played with it too much, but Wordpress seems pretty nice.

Yah, you can use the service hosted by wordpress.com or install it yourself to your own servers. Only takes 5 minutes, I hear...

travelblog.org seems to be pretty cool, I have a friends blog I peek at using this and it seems to be great for pictures, tracking where you've been, and the layout is simple

yeah, i am not sure of wordpress or blogger allowing for a lot of video. definitely would want to check into that aspect.

(though if you did host your own wordpress blog, then its all up to you and you host)

Blogger.com is where you want to be.

You can upload any of your own videos to Youtube, then embed them into your blog as you normally would.

Same deal for pictures, but you could probably setup a Flickr or Picasa account for those. I believe blogger does do some image hosting, just not full on galleries. So it's good for 4-5 pictures per post, but beyond that you'll want one of the two services I mentioned.

If you really want full control over things, you can setup a full site that handles everything, but it's quite a lot of work to get functioning. The Wordpress blog software is the best in class at that though (not to be confused with the Wordpress hosted service).

I'm going to be building a website (actually should've started it months ago) and I'm not certain yet how things will work out, but I suspect most of the content would by static (probably 2 or 3 pages), with the exception of a blog, and possibly a weekly newsletter which would only appear on the website, no need to be emailed out (but could be a nice option in the future). The blog would be done by somebody other than me.

Is there such a blog that can be added to the website that I can customize the look of the blog to mimic that of the website? Perhaps I should make the entire site with content management that way I can give permissions to one or two other people and I wouldn't have to be the guy who always updates the site. Any recommendations on which way to go?

If you have hosting, WordPress is the way to go. You can set up the whole site using it and have the blog with the same layout.

Also, it has plugins for almost any sort of additional application you can think of.

Our business website does just that. We started with a static webpage and then added a news and events type section that can be updated more easily. Our web people recommended and installed wordpress to handle that. So far, it's done what we need it to do and it looks pretty much seamless with the rest of the site.
