Default My iPod touch is toast. What do I do?

OK, so I'm listening to my iPod touch (just over a year old) today when the music stops. There is now no audio whatsoever coming out of the headphones. Everything else, including audio out of the dock works fine.

I have tried all the troubleshooting tips on Apple's website, including resetting it through iTunes. No luck. My iPod is one month past warrenty too!

In talking to Crapple tech support, my only option apparently is to send it into them- for a flat rate of $215!

Any suggestiions? I can't believe I buy something costing me nearly $500 and this is what I get.

Glad to hear you were able to get it going again.

But what a shocker! An iPod craps out a month after the warranty is up!

I've had two do this to me, and although I'm still firmly in the iPod camp, it reminds me of that Chris Rock joke:

They got metal on the space shuttle that can go around the moon and withstand temperatures up to 20,000 degrees. You mean to tell me you don't think they can make an El Dorado where the f-----g bumper don't fall off?

Apple can't solder things so they last longer than a couple years? Frustrating. But yeah, go Apple. Maybe I'm just hard on my MP3 players.

RoHS is the worst thing to have ever happened to electronics. Silly euro's insisting lead be removed from the solder. It results in solder joints that are mechanically not as strong, and more brittle.

Oh well...

Yep, that's the cause of Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death and Nvidia videocard failures on laptops.

Before it started working again did you eliminate your headphones as the source of the problem. Seeing how you were saying everything else was working there is a good chance it could be the headphones.

My iPod is screwed up as well after like 9 months of use. It has a problem with the headphone jack, it thinks my headphones come out (pauses the music when they do come out), thus my music randomly pauses. Some times it goes for a week without a problem, then today it will just crap out on me for like 15 minutes.

The iPod has the worst durability ever. I know why it happens, because they make them weak so they fail in a year or two, but my then Apple has released a new iPod, so you buy that instead of fixing. It is a genius marketing strategy, but a aggravating one to the consumer.

If you are near an official apple store, go there to make an appointment with the "geniuses" (Apple tech people). They couldn't fix it (software problem, non-cracked version) but I was throughly impressed when they just gave me a new Ipod Touch, even though it was past the warrenty by a month (they said it was close enough).

Actually I've heard the apple store will do some surprisingly effective things with broken products.

Sorry if this is a thread hijack, but I'm looking @ a new ipod. How often do people use the features such as the Wi Fi or the games on their touches? That would be the main reason I'd fork out the extra $ for a touch as opposed to a good nano.
Also, I think it might have been covered in another thread, but I couldn't find it: How have people's luck been with refurbs from the Apple online store?

I use my Touch as more of a PDA, with a very good iPod emulator built in

The ability to carry around a calendar, contact list, notepad, and other assorted utility type apps is great. I've used my Touch to do everything from temperature & weight conversions, to note taking, task lists, warranty look up on client equipment, network troubleshooting, reading reference manuals, etc.

The Touch has been described as "training wheels for the iPhone", and I can see why - having always on internet access would be a huge plus. Wifi isn't quite as ubiquitous and accessible as you will eventually want/require/desire. There have been a number of times I've looked at the Touch and thought "if only I had wifi right now", because I wanted to look something up or check an email.

I'm not a huge gamer on my Touch, but the games I have played are very well done. You will be spending money on most of the good ones, so factor that cost in too, when you look at the price of an iPod.

Apple refurb stuff is as close to risk free as you can get. Excellent, outstanding quality on the refurb stuff. I bought an AppleTV refurb, and you would be hard pressed to not know it is new.

I'm on my 3rd iPod after 6 years.

My first one was a 3rd generation iPod classic that I bought as a refurb off Apple for $200. It lasted until last February, though I did do a manual replacement of the battery in that time. It lasted 5 years.

I got an iPod shuffle for free back in 2005 -- still going strong. Seriously, I doubt I can break this thing.

Replaced the old iPod with a new Touch back in July, haven't had a single problem with it. It froze a bit when I first got it, but the recent updates seem to have fixed that problem. No issues with the hardware.

I'm not exactly careful with these products, but I also don't wear on them if I don't have to. My only gripe with Apple's iPod line is that the battery cannot be replaced easily. Thankfully the new Touch has a battery pack that should last it's expected life time (2-3 years).

Often, I find myself carrying around my ipod touch without headphones. Using the Internet on it is simply awesome. I wish it had Flash support, but I can live without it.

Also, I have found the PDA like functions to be quite handy.

The games are amazing for mobile games. Some of the free ones like Jelly Car are incredibly fun, too. You don't always have to pay for fun apps!

That being said, some of the games that use the accelerometer tilt-controls do a poor job of it. Be careful of that.
