Default Wireless Network Security
I've got a modem and a wireless router (2.4GHz 802.11b). To get onto the wireless a password is needed. Is this enough security?

What type of encryption?

WEP has been shown to be pretty weak, WPA is MUCH better

I'm going to leave mine wide open, but I'll put in a transparent proxy so if it's not one of my computers on it all the images will be replaced with nasty pr0n.

Or I might be nice and just turn them all upside down.

Plus an open connection gives me plausible deniability.

When you setup the wireless on the router there should be a way to set what kind of encryption is being used.

I leave mine open but only allow the MAC adresses of computers in my house to use the network.
Is that sufficient??

Depends. For anyone who knows, sniffing the traffic and then spoofing the MAC is quite simple.

If you want to prevent the luddite from accessing your network, good enough, but as mentioned WPA is the way to go.

Also, if you hear any reports about it being broke, they are a lie. Its only been made 100X easier - and when you think of it that isnt a lot with the numbers we are talking about - WEP has been broke.

Well, anything > nothing.

But that being said, MAC addresses are very easy to spoof, and common free software can sniff the packets to get that data.

As long as someone else in your neighbourhood has a access point that isn't secured, people will use that one first. If someone is looking to be malicious, then limiting to MAC addresses is like locking your screen door. You hope it will make them try someone else's door, but it won't really slow them down if they want to try to get in.
