I like Sabathia, but how the hell can anyone justify that for a guy who really hasn't proven himself year after year? 6 years on a pitcher for that amount of money is a huge risk too - especially one that badly conditioned. It's disgusting, but I'm more interested to see what Riccardi's gonna do now.

This is why baseball sucks. Yankees likely offering around 300 million dollars to 3 pitchers, unbelieveable! Outside of 2 other teams, no one can match these offers. The salaries of Jeter, Rodriguez, and Sabathia alone will come close to some of the smaller markets entire payroll.

Geez it's frustrating knowing your team likely doesn't even have chance before the season even starts, and when just when you think you've closed the gap it's gets busted wide open again.
 |
The problem is that teams like the Jays can potentially go out and fit one of those top free agents into their budget, but the risk is far, far too great.

If Sabathia gets injured or completely busts (a la Carl Pavano) then the team is completely sunk for the duration of the contract. So they have to go for second tier free agents (like Burnett was) and hope they put it together and produce like a top tier guy.

They can't justify it, but that doesn't matter.

If he busts then they just put him as #3 in the rotation, eat his salary and pick up the big pitcher next year.

Yep I agree, it's not really competition, the playing field is way too slanted.

			I love this offer. 6 years $140M.
I can't wait to see a 350 pound Sabathia making a early August start in 95 degree weather at Yankee Stadium in 2012 with 3 years 75 millions left to be paid.

Yankees still won't make the playoffs even if they spend 500 million!
Jays should be more worried about Tampa!

The Yankees have so much money that they take a guy and pay him one of the biggest contracts in MLB history when they already have the best player in the game at that position.

Well, darn what are we going to do with the 2 best SS in the MLB? Let's make one a 3rd basemen!!

I get your point, but you can't be serious about Jeter as the best SS in the majors can you?

Why does everything have to have 4,000 threads about the same type of thing? Should a thread be started for every signing or offer this off-season?

Anywho....I hope he doesn't except it. Also he said he wants to play on the West Coast and want to get AB's.

Also MLB, Yanks, Red Sox, etc all suck! How is this fair to other markets? No wonder most of the stadiums are empty on a nightly basis in a lot of ball parks.

It's a competition. It's not supposed to be fair!
Yanks and Red Sox all suck. That's why this year's World Series was the lowest rated series ever. (Even with the 1-hour clinching game)

Parity is not sexy.

This is the reason why I CANNOT STAND THE NY YANKEES!!!!! They feel like they have to buy all the best players in the MLB and overpay them. They like to buy championship which i can't stand.

Then why have 30 teams why not 6? Maybe you will get the ratings...
