I use Audacity to do recording with, easy to use IMO.
The real question is will your audio driver support what you desire without having to do something like use a cable to plug your output into your mic, or put a mic by your speakers..
Using Windows XP I assume, if you double click the speaker icon at the bottom right (or Sounds and Audio Devices, Advanced), you should end up with a list of volume controls for the various audio devices.. Go to Options, Properties and change the radio button to Recording instead of playback, and see if there's an option for "What You Hear" or something like that.. make sure that's checked. Then if you click OK it should show you a list of recording devices and each has a select box, make sure the what you hear one is selected, and when you record with Audacity it should record what you are hearing.
If it's Vista, I'm not sure, but it should be similar...
If you don't have a What You Hear option, try playing around with the different recording devices, selecting each as your source audio is playing and trying to record to see if you get anything.
Hope that helps.
