Transfering stuff to and from an IPOD

My old computer crashed on me so I went out and got a new one. I want to transfer all my music/videos from my 80gb IPOD to my new laptop.

I can get most of it but I cannot get the movies from my IPOD to my new laptop.

Also any new songs I buy from Itunes will not sync with my IPOD. They are on my laptop but I cannot get them on my IPOD.

I do not really use the IPOD alot but my wife does and see cannot figure it out.

Any suggestions?

Perhaps sharepod would help? I don't remember what it does for video though..

I suggest backing up your itunes purchases every time you buy more than a couple songs. It costs 25cents to buy the DVD and it gives you the option to back them up from the point where you last did a backup, so you wont be filling 14 DVD's every time.

Are you sure you are using the same AppleID as your old itunes did? Mixing ID's within a collection, while I believe is possible, is a sure fire way to hate Apple and iTunes in real short order.

Try Senuti. I always keep a copy of it for file transfers whenever Itunes won't let me. Actually, I keep both a Mac and PC install file for Senuti on my ipod, so that whatever computer I hook up to, I can install Senuti and start copying files.

Is the problem simply getting the movies from your ipod to your computer?

If so you can "bypass" itunes and access your ipod's hard drive by doing this:

- Start with the iPod disconnected from the computer - DON'T CONNECT IPOD
YET
- open iTunes
- open iTunes Preferences - this blocks iTunes from seeing an iPod
connection; leave the preferences window up and running
- connect the iPod to the computer, wait about 15 seconds before continuing
- open 'My Computer'
- Tools menu, Folder Options, View tab, enable 'show hidden files /folders'
- open iPod icon in My Computer
- open iPod_Control folder
- you should see a folder named Music
- drag this folder to somewhere on your computer hard drive
- after the copy completes, right-click the new Music folder on your hard
drive and select 'Properties'
- clear the checkmark next to 'Hidden'
- Close that explorer window
- eject iPod from System tray "Safely Remove Hardware" icon. This icon looks
like a small gray rectangle with a green arrow floating above it. It's only
there when a removable device (like the iPod in this case) is attached to
the computer. Right-click & select 'Safely remove..', then click 'Stop' in
the next window, OK in the next window, and then Close to complete the
ejection.
- disconnect the iPod from the computer

- go back to iTunes, cancel the preferences window
- File menu \ Add folder to Library \ find that Music folder copied over
from the iPod

(Just pick and choose the videos that aren't syncing I would think, rather than copying the music folder)

And also, maybe your ipod won't sync with your laptop for the new songs because they don't have identical hard drives (aren't actually synced)?

Or maybe I'm way off base.

Will the Dvd backup everything in tunes even if its not purchased?

There might be, however I have never tried it. I normally have no desire to though since most of the rest of my stuff ( before I started buying online) is backed up to a set of DVD's, or I have the original CD to rip the MP3's again.

If you do want to backup everything and itunes wont do it for you, just split your itunes folder into 4 gig chunks and burn to DVD. It isn't real pretty, and it won't auto restore, but it will work.
