Default PC game recommendations

I've had laptops forever and finally bought a new desktop for home. I used to be a console gamer but never a pc gamer (except for Leisure Suit Larry!) and I would love some advice on a good game or two to get my feet wet. I'm probably most interested in the turn based strategy games like Age of Empires and the like. Also I don't really want to get into the whole WOW thing as I'm a big enough nerd already.

Gracias.

Try Company of Heroes and World in Conflict for strategy type games.

Any other genres you're interested in?

Definitely Civilizations 4. Can't stress enough how awesome Civ4 is.

(...and Civ3 ...and Civ2 ... and Civ1 ...)

I know you've stated you don't "want to get into WoW," but CoH is in the same genre. If you're going to go that route, you might as well check out WoW since everything else is really a distant second.

Edit: Speaking of heroes, another PC strat game to check out is Heroes of Might and Magic.

And as someone who got suckered into WoW....go for it....it's not just for nerds anymore (or so my ex told me when he got me to give it a try! )

Also if you know someone who plays, they can get a free mount (a zebra-esque unicorn thing called a Zherva) for referring you & you creating an acct so you can do them a good turn too.

The new WoW referral is CRAZY!

Basically, if a friend refers you, they get a free month. If you level with your friend in a group, you get 3x the experience for mobs AND QUESTS! Also, for every 2 levels you gain, 1 level can be given to a lower level character. You and your friend can also instant summon eachother to any spot in the world. Plus, free zherva mount!

Get WoW and just play casual. With this program, you're crazy not to.

The Total War series are all very good. Not strictly turn based though.

All the recommendations have been really good. Gal Civ 2 is a fantastic turn based game. Civ 4 is obviously a must have. If you can pick up the Civilization Chronicles anywhere, do so.

The Combat Mission series of games are a good turn based series of games too. Get them here:

Yes for RTW. I am kind of a crazy person when it comes to that point in history, the game is very good if you can still find it. They sell the TW series as a box set, very good.

Never played City of Heroes.

While it is an old game it is an awesome game, Knights of The Old Republic (KotOR). It is an rpg with a couple of different paths to take. You can go light side or dark side and it has plenty of different side quests with different outcomes.

Not as good but still good is Knights of The Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords.

I've gone through both games a few times each.

I guess these weren't PC only as they were made for Xbox as well, but still awesome games.

hey, if you are into the civ experience, civ3 might be more fulfilling. it still has a very strong community. and a lot of long time civ players still think its the better game. they really nerfed civ4. kind of dumbed it down to appear to a larger audience. the games real cheap and might be worth a shot.

civfanatics.com is a great website for the civ series.
