Calgary considering banning new Drive-Thrus
Quote:
Both aldermen said banning new drive-thrus would drop carbon emissions from idling cars that wait in line, while Pincott said it would improve communities by making people talk face-to-face instead of through a speaker.

Would this have any effect? Or would people be idling waiting for the lower number of parking spots? This would create an inequity between places that have a drive-thru and those that won't be allowed to have one. An interesting idea worth being discussed, but I don't see this going very far.

I'm all for it. These days it's twice as fast parking and going in to get food instead of going through the drive thru. When I attempt a drive thru, it can take up to 20 min (in Red Deer) while walking in has me out of there in 5-10min. Sometimes you don't have a choice though, because I see another major problem with this plan. The parking lots aren't big enough to handle the same amount of customers if there was no drive thru. Part of the reason I use drive thru's is because I can't even find a spot to park.
Of course it will never happen because it makes no fiancial/business/zoning sense. Why would the city want to limit the number of companies that want to do business which gives the city more cashflow (if given the choice of no drive thru, they probably won't build).

I guarantee it won't be a 5-10 minute trip inside if they ban drive thrus. Because all the people that were in the drive thru line up are now inside.

Good. Get off your duff and interact with the rest of society.
There are far too many people in this world who's first words out of their mouth every morning are not to a loved one, but instead to a metal speaker whilst sitting in their car.

Do you really think customers are doing to demand to be served in a less convenient way? Drive by any Tim Horton’s between 7 and 9 am and tell me that customers don't want drive thrus

While they're at it, the government should just ban fast food. Surely there can't be any good associated with those places.
Even though I love Big Macs and Whoppers and Teen Burgers.

They were claiming on the radio that drive-thrus take up a lot more space due to the extra laneways required. I wonder if the higher cost of land these days will reduce the number of new drive throughs anyway. I know in Vancouver there were a lot fewer drive throughs.

Perfect... just saying right now the useage is biased towards the drive true. Society is getting lazier and lazier each year.

So are they going to issue licenses for these and when one shuts down they can sell it to another place or are they trying to just get rid of all of them.
Doesn't really bother me, I don't usually eat at places with drive thrus but I can see where elderly and handicap (like the article mentions) could have a problem.

I think the proposal was a moratorium on new drive-throughs, not getting rid of existing ones.
Frankly, I wouldn't be opposed to banning drive-throughs in certain areas. Like areas that are supposed to be mixed commercial-residential.

Complete and utter BS. Global Warming is being used to inflict many new types of fascism upon the world. It's about choice. If you believe that drive thru's, living in the suburbs, driving in general, is the root of all evil, move to Kensington and shut the hell up, you have that choice. Enough with the smug attitude and the belief that it's your mission that people should be forced to live your "superior" lifestyle. As oil and gas start to cost more people are already making choices and priorities vis-a-vis, where they live in proximity to where they work, how big a house they want to heat in the winter, etc. It should be their choice to make and not forced upon them in the near term. Reality will force it's hand as Calgary gets more populated, let these things naturally play out instead of trying to convert Calgary into New York City overnight.
