Default New Gateway PC looks like a MAC

This is kind of interesting, I've always liked the look of the Imac...

I'm pretty sure Steve Jobs would kill himself if his company came out with something that looked like that. Look at the keyboard...

I also find it hilarious PC makers still put "We recommend Windows Vista Home Premium", even after it's been fully discovered how terrible Vista turned out.

Steve Jobs may have killed himself if Apple hadn't done this eleven years ago. Congratulations Gateway.

Price right (like 30-50% less than a Mac), this could make a dent in the "Oooh, it's a pretty computer" crowd that a portion of the Mac fanbase is based on.

They're nice but they are priced higher than an iMac in all models. Knockoffs aren't typically more expensive and specd lower so I'm not sure what Gateway's plan is. The "all in one" also comes with an external power supply.

I think the real big news is Gateway is still in existence!

On a slightly off-topic note, I was sitting in the library at mt royal about an hour ago, and out of 10 people I could see on laptops, 8 were macs. I thought that was pretty odd, since mac only has about 5% of the market.

That Gateway is distguisting though, and Barnes is right, how is Gateway still around?

That's the 20th anniverssary Apple. It was a horrible computer in a fancy design. Jerry Seinfeld had one in his apartment as a prop.

Because you're just looking at the college market and Macbooks are the most popular with students.

Hmm interesting. Does PC include both desktop and laptop, I usually just associate the word PC with desktop, but im sure thats not true. It would be cool to see that same chart just for uni students, Id bet apple would be pushing 50%.

Acer bought out Gateway for $710M back in Sept for $1.90 a share. Might sound rich but keep in mind Gateway's high was $81.50 a share.

Agreed, those are some lousy prices and so so specs. Nice that it's upgradable. Still, the "all in one" isn't some technological proprietary piece of Apple Magic - it's a matter of design and engineering. With it's extensive laptop experience and economies of scale, I figure Dell could produce something quite good that would cut into iMac sales. For your non fanboi buyer anyways.

Glad to see other vendors are starting to explore the integrated computer concept. If my work machine could be replaced by something like that, I'd save a ton of deskspace.

But... the Apple iMacs are better spec'd and don't come with Vista. Plus, they just plain look better.

Step in the right direction but the execution is sloppy.

I used to say that the Apple vs PC argument was moot, because they target two different groups. Apples, out of the box, are far more suited toward media (music, movies, pictures, etc) and PCs are better for pretty much everything else. It depended on what you wanted. But now with the Apples' ability to run the Windows OS and software as well as any PC, there is no question left for me.

Apple nerds unite!

It's not surprising manufacturers are starting to copy the Apple's look and all in one design ... the only surprise is it took them so long. Apple has always been the innovator. If not for Apple the computing world would still be looking at a dos prompt.

So because Apple came out with a computer a decade ago that resembles the shape of the Gateway now, Steve Jobs is supposed to be ashamed? What does it say about Gateway? I'm not sure i get the arguement there...the TAM looked quite different from any other computer out there...just like the current IMacs do today.

I think the Gateway is handsome, but it's clearly an apple design knock-off.

Actually, I think IBM was the first one to come out with an all-in-one design including a flat panel monitor - they released the NetVista x40 series back in 2001-2002, when the iMac was that ugly CRT screen with everything built in...

Sorry for the crappy pictures, hard to find pics of these things.
