has anyone ever gone to Karma in mckenzie, or Namskar on 16th ave?
any opinions on these restaurants?
or any other suggestions for East Indian cuisine?

Gloria of India x2. Great lunch buffet. Or you could go to Iginla's favorite, Moti Mahal. It's a little pricey though.

where is glory of india located? is there ample parking nearby? i prefer to stay away from downtown due to parking.

If you live in the SE end of the city check out Karma. Amazing east indian food and even better indo-chinese menu.

It is located at 130th ave and deerfoot trail in the shops of south trail. In the same parking lot as the Keg.

Glory of India is wicked good Indian food with so much flavour! There is a Staples (or Office Depot?) nearby that has some parking.

As for Namskar, it's only so-so.

What dishes do you recommend - not too spicey? Indian food is probably the only cuisine I have never tried, from an ethnic style standpoint.

I like going to Chutney (4th Ave & Centre Street, in Sunlife Plaza, so unfortunately, is in downtown).

Another one is the Clay Oven off Barlow & 32nd Ave NE

We sometimes go to the lunch buffet on the one on the SW corner of 17th ave and 14th street, not sure which one that is.

If you like vegetarian food, check out Anapurna - it is on the corner of 52nd Str NE and Memorial. Other favourites - Glory of India and Clay Oven

My favorite is Clay Oven... it's in the northeast. I drive about 45 minutes every time I go there because the food is so good - authentic, good portions (always leftovers). They have I believe the best butter chicken in the city - unlike other places they can make it nice and spicy. As well the service is awesome and the ambience is decent. It's not the ambience of say a Mango Shiva, but Mango Shiva's food was god awful. Namskar, I didn't find very good, and Moti Mahal is decent. Good naans but the food leaves a little to be desired. For Karma, I went there a little while ago and was unimpressed - a lot of the times when restaurants go for fusion food they get both elements wrong and that's what I felt here (same with Mango Shiva, yuck). Taj Mahal is another one that used to be great. I'm not sure how it is any more but it's on Macloed trail if I recall correctly - decent food at decent fare.

The new one that opened up on 8th Ave and 2nd is pretty decent, forget what it's called. Put me down in the Moti Mahal category.

Nehwab on 5th Ave and between 1st S.E and Centre St is excellent. Very good Indian food.

'East Indian' is more of an anachronism than anything else.

You can just say Indian restaurants nowadays.

Do you want actual e.i. food like people cook in their homes? Most of the places out there don't offer this. To someone like me who is e.i., it is noticeable and many of the places like glory of india and chutney and even moti mahal's food just tastes watered down and not spicy enough.

All of the following have food similar to how people cook at home:

My personal fav is Skylark Restaurant. I'd put clay oven and skylark in the same category for food but clay oven does have slightly better service. Skylark is at 52nd st. and 17 ave SE (in the hood) in the same plaza as the Marks Work Wearhouse. The food is great. They do catering and takeout too. The only thing is they don't have waiters (unless the owner counts). So sometimes when its really busy the service can be a little down but the food is great.

In the plaza at Mcknight and 52nd a few doors down from Safeway and right next to the Quiznos there is 'Bombay Palace'. They have a buffet most days. The food is good but I'd say skylark is better. Same thing for service when it gets crazy busy you might have to wait. Don't know why they just don't hire waiters for the busy times.

Taj Mahal (aprrox East side of Mcleod Tr at around 50th ave) is the first e.i. restaurant in Calgary and is still alright but it has gotten to be a bit pricier then the rest for their buffet.

Butter chicken is the white person's Indian staple. I find it really good at Glory of India, as well as Masala (sp?) in Ranchlands. I can survive off of copious amounts of butter chicken and nan bread no problem. Lots of the vegetable curries are really good, beef vindaloo (sp?) if you like spice. The deserts are awesome too.
