Guadalajara used to be a pretty nice city 15 years ago. It had some issues, but still a general feeling of basic respect for people. Most of the cartel things were farther north.
I remember a crazy thing where a bunch of bodies were displayed in front of the iconic roundabout and city statues, and after that everything started to spiral.
Mexico should straight up declare war on cartels. They aren't even Mexican anymore, functioning as a separate entity.

Problem is the cartel is in enough government, police and military pockets to survive.
This and the Ryan Wedding thing are surprising though, but I guess the US getting involved has "helped".
Make sure Canadian flags are on full display if down there more so than normal.

An Instagram contact of mine is there now. His resort is surrounded by plumes of smoke from various structure fires. What a sheltered part of the world we live in, as Canadians.

My elderly octogenarian parents are there right now. Haven't heard from them yet. This is a sh*t show in the making.

Have a friend there now too. Messaged but haven't heard back. They're usually quick to reply.

My folks have checked in, they are ok. They have been told to stay at their resort. They were meant to check out of it this morning and move to a villa with my sister (who was flying there today) for the upcoming week. Sister is stuck in Vancouver after her flight was cancelled.
WestJet has apparently covered my folks room for the night. They cannot get to the other villa as all cabs/ubers are not working.

Besides a reflection of the American education system, the videos show the area around Guadalajara and the Guadalajara International Airport.

My entire family is down there right now, sheltering in place / locked in their rooms. Supposed to leave back to the airport today, but they had to quickly turn around and head quickly back to the hotel. So far they're fine (thank god), but some of the imagery they'be been sending us of PV is wild.
