6 Quiet Truths Behind the Rasmus Andersson Trade to Vegas

After an agonizing week of will-they-won’t-they trade rumors surrounding Calgary Flames defenceman Rasmus Andersson, a trade was finally formalized with the Vegas Golden Knights. The 29-year-old Swede is off to Nevada in exchange for defenceman Zach Whitecloud, a 2027 first round pick, a conditional 2028 second round pick, and University of North Dakota defenceman Abram Weibe.

UND defenseman Abram Wiebe reacts to trade to Calgary Flames

Abram Wiebe was sitting on the couch in his apartment Sunday afternoon when his phone rang.

It was Vegas Golden Knights director of player development Wil Nichol on the other line.

Beyond the Boxscore: Flames lack of attack remains a problem in 4-1 loss to Penguins

CF% – 46.11%|| SCF% – 41.64%|| HDCF% – 29.91%|| xGF% – 39.2%
It’s a Team Game – The Flames offence continues to be the focal point of the majority of their struggles. The last two weeks, and in this game specifically, the attack in the offensive zone was too stagnant and not threatening enough to be of any real significance. When the Flames did get pressure the shots all got initiated from the point, just praying it finds a bounce to get by the goaltender.

Will Hunter Brzustewicz need to return to the Wranglers to make room for Zayne Parekh?

The Rasmus Andersson trade has happened and while the dust settles, it’s no secret the Flames are carrying a lot of depth on the right side of their blue line. With Zach Whitecloud coming in and Zayne Parekh healthy and on a temporary conditioning stint with the Wranglers, it seems a likely possibility that Hunter Brzustewicz may need to spend some time back in the AHL this season. However, that might not be the worst thing.

Not upset with you, Cheese, but I really hate people that react like this, especially with ZERO context. Say what you want, but Ryan Lomberg was one of our better forwards the last few games. Really made something happen every time he was on the ice in the offensive zone and was playing very strong defense too.

Gridin is a 19 year old rookie who is just learning the pro game. He does need some sheltering at times. It's not unheard of.

It's just stupid and simplistic thinking to look at TOI and think that players aren't being given enough time or aren't being developed properly. Patience is needed with prospects, even if they look really good at times.

Someone looks at the shifts and noticed that Gridin’s missing time came mid-second period. That doesn’t seem like a benching or not using him at key times. Could easily have been an equipment issue, maybe he old Sutter excuse for a player’s absence.

And yeah, Lomberg was absolutely flying. If he had any kind of hands around the net he’d be a second liner - he has great speed and obviously has enough grit.

Pat Steinberg said in the post game show that Gridin missed a few shifts due to a helmet issue and figures his ice time would have been +60-75 seconds.

Hopefully they find a way to keep Gridin up. I think he’d benefit more from NHL time at this point. He’s our best offensive prospect. Seems like he’s quite confident as well.

It was his best performance of the year.

Suspect the Flames will get flattened tonight.
But…that’s why they play the games. GFG!

If this isn't a clear illustration of why these stats are largely useless (except with significant sample sizes), I don't know what is.

The only player on this list that has been a truly effective player over that period (think of a positive WAR stat in baseball) is Coleman. EVERY other player is a function of sheltered minutes.

I laughed on 960 this morning, they crew were asking Wills if he thinks CGY should Wade Redden Huberdeau to the AHL at his full cap hit, and Wills was shocked to hear we've got 5 more years after this one of this nightmare.

Everyone cried.

Hey Cheese - neither Cali nor I were directing our posts at you, you're just the messenger with these quotes.

As always, your GDTs are absolutely incredible, and one of the best things on CP> Thank you for them!

It was a pretty dire segment. Huberdeau and his contract are a nightmere, nothing nice can be said about it.

Send us on our way with a nice big ol' L, Ovie. Pop a couple into the net for the local crowd while you're at it, and lock the Flames into 31st in the standings tonight.

A fun rule the NHL should and never ever would implement:

If a long term contract is signed by a GM who joins a new team while more than 50% of that contract is remaining, the GM inheriting that contract should be able to send that contract (on July 1 of any year while more than 50% of the contract still remains) to the new GM’s team for future considerations.

We’ll call it the “Live with your mistakes” rule.

Sure beat us, but i hope Klapka, Lomberg and Pospisil punish Ovie like he was on the frontline in Donbas.
