Let's Talk About Shaving
Whats the game plan for a good shave?
How often do you shave?
What do you use after?
I'd love to know some suggestions for well priced sustainable products.
Is shaving your face over rated?

Shaving soap and a badger hair brush. Regular 3 blade cartridge razor. Shave in the shower every other morning. Rarely shave on the weekend.
Moisturizing face cream after the shower.

Mach 5 and Nivea. Rinse with water, my face is perfection all on it's own.

Any safety razor and soap. Only things you need, and much better shave than any multiblade nonsense or machine. Also way cheaper, and the only thing more sustainable in the ecological sense would be a straight razor shave.
(Even the soap is really only necessary when you need a really baby smooth shave.)
I typically shave in the evening because I'm slow to wake up and don't want to do anything extra in the mornings, and I have a pretty rugged daily look anyway.
I'll shave an extra time if there's a reason to actually look sharp.

i shave every morning... although honestly, i could go 3-4 days without shaving and my wife would ask 'did you forget to shave today?' :|
i shave as soon as i get out of the shower. i use an old gillette sensor excel (only two blades) and shaving gel. i find the cartridges last forever (usually 2-3 months)
rinse with warm water afterwards and that's it

All I can get

Safety razor with Feather brand blade. Feathers are the sharpest, yet smooth on your skin. Shaving Soap. Badger brush. Pre-shave is store-brand Vitamin E creme for glide. Followed up with a splash of Witch Hazel.
Usually every second day, and also an evening shaver.

Henson safety razor with Nivea or whatever shaving lotion type stuff I currently have. Tried it after using multi blade ones and I like it the best. Disposable ones are my 2nd go to.
However I don't usually shave that close, most of the time I use a OneBlade.
Usually shave every 3-4 days so it can get a bit scruffy around the beard.
For my beard itself these days I just keep it all the same length and fairly short, go over it all with a #9 guard once a week or so.

Safety razor with preferred blades (important). The cheapest safety razor is excellent to try out. A heftier one is bonus. With the right blades, shaving with just water is fine for me. Less preferred blades or sensitive skin, a little bit of face wash works if you don't want to jump into soaps (ie: Cetaphil, Crave, bar, shaving cream etc).
Optional, finish with alum block. If your fingers feel slippery when wet shaving, touch the alum block with wet finger tips before starting and it won't slip as much.
Anything else is just extra, but don't get me wrong, a basic shave with a safety razor is so much more satisfying than using an electric or disposable. Better soap, aftershave etc. Even more satisfying. Pulling up out all the stops is a premium shaving experience I didn't realize I'd enjoy.
Safety razors I use are cheap China brand butterfly razors, Rockwell 6C/model T adjustable and Merkur Futur adjustable with Astra and feather blades depending on mood. 5 o clock shadow comes several hours later than electric or disposable.
Electric/disposable has its place and is convenient and I still use them, but they are not premium shaves.

I shave my head in the shower usually every 2-3 days. I like the Gillette Fusion 5 though they are pricey. I just use a regular 'ole Irish Spring bar of soap. I used to shave it every day but I find it gets more smooth when there is a little more stubble to grab, I guess. If i have a planned function and want to look my best, I'll let it grow for 4-5 days before I shave it.
Then when I hop out of the shower, I shave part of my face (I have a short beard and a little longer goatee) without any soap. I just try not to dry my face and leave some wetness there.
Last step is to put some moisturizer on my head. I can then run my hand over it and any spots that I didn't do a very good job on can be easily felt. The moisturizer works fine as a lubricant to touch up those spots with my razor.
Sounds like a long process when I write it all out but it's no more than five minutes or so, plus the shower.

I use a cut-throat razor for normal shaving, badger hair brush and soap and some aftershave and use an electric razor for trimming the beard.

Shave like your grandpa. Switched 5 years ago to badger brush and safety razor, and its cheaper, better, and you feel like a god damn boss.

After years of that cheap Chinese Mach 3/4/5 bs it was lifechanging.

Does anyone here shave their head with a safety razor? I shave in the shower so it's a "no look" process for me. The odd nick happens but the Fusion 5 seems pretty forgiving and safe. I do seem to burn through razors pretty quickly. Probably get four to five shaves, at the most, out of a cartridge. How does a safety razor stack up, wear-wise?

Cut throat razor for a twice weekly beard line up. Proraso shaving cream and soothing lotion.
A $15 pack of Derby Premium blades will last two year (although I wouldn’t go this route for a daily shave).
Renpho Beard Trimmer for a weekly beard trim.

I was doing safety razors for a long time; Feather blades (started with Derbys but I loved the Feathers) with Gilette SuperSpeeds, Merkur HD 38C long-handle, and Merkur Progress handles, and occasionally a shavette -- like a straight razor but you load it with safety razor blades split in half.
Then I thought I would give Dollar Shave Club a try and I've been using them for what feels like a decade now. Purely out of convenience and ease of use. But more and more, I've been thinking I should go back to my trusty safety razors. They just did a better job. No, they were not nearly as easy for under-nose trimming and I definitely gave myself a few good nicks by accident over the years, but all-in-all, it was just a better shave.

My facial hair isn't super coarse nor am I susceptible to razor burn or ingrown hairs, so what type of razor I use isn't that important. I don't even really need to use aftershave, just usually cold water is good. I do have a bottle of witch hazel that contains a small amount of alcohol if I do feel inclined to use aftershave. I just really don't like the strong odours that most commercial aftershaves have. I also rarely shave my whole face, just neck and high cheeks, then use an electric razor to have perpetual stubble.
