I like Backlund and appreciate his shut down nature on the top lines. I am sure there will be some against it as they wanted to move on, but it gives time for the recently drafted C's to work their way up and take over at about the time of retirement. I also love the loyalty to the flames and the character he brings. Retiring a lifelong flame. I love it.

That's a good deal, I hope the Flames would slowly transition Backlund to a 4th line C, making him one of the best in the league. Creating a 4th line that's perfect for developing the next generation of the Flames.

That's the play with the word "slowly" being key.
It could be as soon as this year if he loses a step, but based on last year's metrics I'm guessing he's the third line guy for at least one more year, and likely two.

Good move. He's almost a player/coach at this point. Great mentor for the prospects moving through the system. The decreased salary shows he's acknowledging he may be in a reduced role as he ages.

He seems like a decent captain and has been great in the community, but I will be happy when this chapter of the team is done with and the next version starts. With a little luck the mediocrity will be over (for better or worse).

Okay....i understand and i am a sentimental old bugger but i wonder out loud about this too.
Can there be alternate? Can we acknowledge other guys leadership here as well?
Lets be honest here . Should all leaders be C ...A.... is it just an honor?
I see other guys on this squad who inspire more....they just do.
