Reinhart was one of the early stars in Calgary.

I remember when he signed the first "million dollar" contract on the Flames... not a million per season, a multiyear deal that paid one-million total (I think it was 4 years).

He was also one of the rare players who got better in the playoffs. He was a career 0.86 P/G in the regular season and 0.93 P/G in the playoffs... which itself is insane for a defenceman. In fact, IIRC, Bob Johnson moved him to forward for a period of time.

I always felt bad for Reinhart and Berezan for being big parts of the team for many years, but getting moved just before the Cup (Reinhart that offseason and Berezan at the deadline in 89). Of course, it almost backfired because Reinhart was one of the reasons the Canucks pushed the Flames to Game 7 OT in the first round that year.

Reinhart may be the most forgotten Flames star.

EDIT: Bonus for Reinhart is the effect his kids have had on the Oilers - Sam beat them and Griffin was a horrific trade for them.

I get the dislike for Fox the person, but let’s get real here, he was voted the best defenceman one year and has basically been a top 10 defenceman league wide his entire career so far. Fox the person sucks, but Fox the draft pick was amazing.

Reinhart's career ended so early too. This season, Sam is the same age Paul was when he played his final season.

----------

Speaking of retiring young, does anyone remember what the story was with Chouinard? He was only 27 when he played his last season, and he still put up 46 points in 64 games. He came back the next season, had 7 points in 9 games in the IHL and then retired. Did he have an injury?

It's weird because he was only traded for future consierations after a 72 point season here.

From a chat room so take it for what it's worth:

Well, Chouinard was basically chased out of St. Louis by GM Ron Caron.
He first ended up in the doghouse of Jacques Demers and was a healthy scratch for the majority of the 1984 playoffs. Then in the summer Caron told Guy Chouinard and Jack Carlson that their days were over with the Blues and that the team would go with younger players.Carlson was one month away from being 30 and Chouinard was still only 27.

Chouinard was not invited to training camp in the fall and it wasn’t until early January 1985 that the Blues management contacted Chouinard again. He was still under contract and was told that they might need his services again in case the Blues would run into injuries.

They asked him to get into shape by playing some games in Peoria, but after a month there they told him he wasn’t needed anymore. By that point he was thinking about a coaching career. I am not sure though why he didn’t try to hook up with another team, maybe he was just fed up with it all.

I also read that injuries were piling up for him. And he'd become a PP specialist, and fell way behind Federko and Gilmour in the depth chart.

I don't entirely disagree but I think Fox is quickly falling down the list of best dmen. I don't think he will ever win a Norris again or even be a finalist. And increasingly there is talk that one of the issues is they have to pay Fox like a #1, but he's not really a #1.
But yeah he's still a top 10 dman and an amazing pick.

He just doesn't impress me like a Makar or other top D. He's more of a Hamilton for me. Except smaller and more easily controlled.

The same year Darnell Nurse was considered for the Norris. That COVID season tarnishes the trophies won when you're only playing 1/4 teams all year.

Should have an asterisk on it and rightfully so.

I can sort of understand voting Makarov ahead of Fox, but the Backlund and Wolf votes seem to lean towards voting for best draft pick for the flames as opposed to the best flames draft pick. I’d argue that at Fox’s worst he’s been better than Backlund ever was.
