Flames 2021 Redraft

The Hockey Guy did a 2021 redraft (stating that 4 years is the min for assessing players).

We drafted Matt Coronato at 12... and he says in a redraft Matt Coronato is the 12th best player. Roughly 8 min into the clip.

Which I think means our scouting did the best they possibly could have given the selection? At least 4 years on? Here's hoping he continues his upward trajectory and comes out as one of the top selections over his career.

Good to see drafting is an area of strength for this franchise!

Dallas got another two steals in Johnston and Stankoven. Johnston is the only one they could have taken over Coronato that is a miss on that list but easy with hindsight.

Watched this the other day and I thought he had some guys a little too high, but when it's all said and done I think Flames still end up with Coronato as the BPA in that range.

Coronato was a great selection.

In hindsight, Knies or Stankoven would have been much better selections than Stromgren in the 2nd round. Even Aatu Raty would have been a better selection.

For context on rankings, Stromgren was 45 on McKenzie's list while Stankoven and Raty were 27 and 28, respectively. Knies was lower at 62, so he did come out of nowhere to become a borderline star in less than 4 years.

We needed to draft top talent and missed an opportunity with several great players available in the second round.

I'm glad this has changed recently with picks like Potter and (to a lesser extent) players like Mews and Misa.

Funny to read the Coronato draft day topic with some of the same characters discussing how unhappy he looked getting selected by Calgary.

Oh I love re-drafts.
I also re-call at the time, there was some amount of unhappiness because Sillinger went right before, and if the Flames had simply not gained a couple points in the standings, they could have had him. Now I think we all agree Coronato was the better pick.

I didn't watch the video but here is my re-draft.

1. Luke Hughes (way more upside than power in my view)
2. Wyatt Johnston (could be #1)
3. Owen Power
4. Dylan Guenther (some might say this is high, but I think he's a 40 goal guy at minimum, and very soon)
5. Mason McTavish
6. Matt Beneirs
7. Simon Edvinsson
8. Matt Knies
9 Logan Stankoven
10. Kent Johnson
11. William Eklund
12. Matt Coronato
13. Brand Clarke
14. Olen Zellweger
15. Cole Sillinger
16. JJ Moser
17. Zach Bolduc
18. Jesper Wallstedt
19. Mackie Samoskevich
20. Jackson Blake
21. Fedor Svechkov
22. Ryker Evans
23. Josh Doan
24. Scott Morrow
25. Josh Roy
26. Sebastian Cossa
27. Zach L'Heureux

Ok I ran out of steam there.

Full credit to Coronato for overcoming not one, but two areas of concern (size and skating).

Also full credit to the scouting staff for evaluating his 'dawg' potential to overcome his weaknesses. He'll do anything to win (including fighting!).

I don’t think Stankoven deserves to go over Coronato, personally.

Yeah that's fair, and in fact I think these 4 are all in a grouping where it's all about the same:

9 Logan Stankoven
10. Kent Johnson
11. William Eklund
12. Matt Coronato

I think you have Beniers a bit high and I recognize he was bumped down from his original 2 slot. I watch a lot more Kraken being in town and he generally leaves me wanting more. He doesn't have the oomph to his game to be a 1C.

Stankoven has proven more than Coronato at this point IMO but they're really close. Would be nice if CGY had both.

Yeah, I think the answer to anyone reacting to draft day facial reactions should just be:

"That's just his face"

By what measure? Coronato has all but established himself as an NHL’er with a scoring touch. Stankoven is still finding his way in the league. He’s been good in spurts hasn’t shown he can consistently deliver as a point getter yet.

Agreed that it would be nice to have both.
