Feels like Silovs is the guy with a much better chance of becoming a longterm player in the NHL compared to the assets the Canucks got back. He looked pretty good in the Canucks last playoff run I thought and just finished off a really strong Calder Cup performance for Abbotsford. Not much the Canucks could do here though after extending Lankinen last year already and then bringing Demko back too this summer as Silovs would have been claimed off waivers for sure.

Didn't get just won them a Calder cup? Like he's really good. Who they got behind Demko to cover for the eventual injury?

Lankinen ... who's on an NMC. They had to move Silovs for something or lose him on waivers for nothing.

I always liked Chase Stillman, but boy he’s struggled in the AHL with injuries and poor production, although he was never going to be a top-6 NHLer.

Yup, this too was my worry... Canucks already bailed the Oilers out once this summer, so them not getting Silovs is a good thing.

It was Arturs Silovs for Abbotsford in the Calder Cup playoffs; he was even the playoff MVP

I was hoping he was a late bloomer, but he did absolutely nothing in the Devils farm system. The flipped him at the deadline for Cory Glass which was some nice GM work from Fitz.

That's an absolute steal of a trade for Pittsburgh. Silovs is either a 1B or a 1A starter in the league right now, and could be more.

Vancouver makes this trade after giving a 3 year deal to the oft-injured Demko, who is unlikely to repeat his peak seasons ever again. This has been a year of banking on the wrong players and trading away talent.

Vancouver is no good.

Silovs is going to have better numbers than Demko this year...

The things I've heard about Silovs is that he is an excellent AHL goaltender, but he his weaknesses do create questions around how he will handle the NHL. In particular his tracking of shots thru traffic is something he struggles with. In the NHL players can get to the tough area's and shooters are better at getting those pucks through.

No he is not, he had a great playoffs two years ago but couldn’t win the backup job this past year which is why they got lankinen, I think van has a couple other goalie prospects that will mature just in time for two current goalies to move on.
Van is no good but developing and finding goalies may be one of the few things they do well

I think a few people forgetting how terrible Silovs was in the NHL this past season. Unproven goaltenders just don't fetch much. Pens have terrible goaltending and they're probably okay if they suck next year, so definitely a worthwhile gamble from their point of view.

Good for Silovs, he gets to play in the NHL (likely) something that he wouldn't be able to do in Vancouver. He is an interesting goaltender because he makes lights out saves but then lets in awful goals from distance. With the Canucks having Demko and Lankinen both signed for the next few years there wasn't a spot for him on the Canucks roster. As for AHL numbers I remember when Brochu won the Calder Cup with the St. John Flames and then promptly did nothing in the NHL. Just how it works out sometimes.

Does Allvin know that he can trade with other teams though?

They should have traded Demko IMO

Demko when healthy is a top goaltender in the league and can allow for the team to make the playoffs. Silovs isn't anywhere close to that. While he may develop into that type of player I don't see that as a realistic expectation. In October of last year he was very bad at the NHL level.

Glad they didn't. Let them overpay their injury prone goalie.
