Calgarypuck Prospect Ranking 2025 - Setting the List
Always like to get this up for a day or two before we launch the actual process.
I built a long list using two depth charts, and then recent draft picks to make sure no player was missed.
As a result probably some that shouldn't be included.

List looks good and I agree with you not having Cicek and Okhotyuk on the list. I wonder if you could do it in reverse order this year going from not so good to hall of fame. Might keep it more interesting as summer continues on.

mostly I'm just keen to get going !! I tend to err on the side of inclusion, as I don't mind the vote dragging on til puck drop but I guess there should be some consistency- goalies I tend to think over include regardless of age because goalies are witches
some sort of age cutoff around 24 and under seems to make sense- but ends up with some edges cases- I would say if no Morton, no Cicek
I'm meh either way on Boltmann and Okhotyuk
everyone else LFG!!!

not sure if we have ever formally done this but at the end of the ranking can we do a vote for the Josh Jooris award? (player outside the top 15 or 20 most likely to play 40 games this season - or some sort of cutoff)
this list is going to be really fun through 15 and , not bad 15-25

I wouldn't include Cicek or Okhotyuk, also Blotmann's rights expire on August 15th unless he is signed. Lapinski's rights are a little unclear as they would have expired on June 1st, but he is now going to the University of Maine next year, so I don't know if he is now subject to the NCAA rules.

My criteria for being a prospect is pretty simple. Two criteria must be satisfied.
1. Be 25 or under (gives a little extra leeway for goalies who take longer to develop)
2. Be under some sort of club control.
I'm good with Cicek because he satisfies the criteria and he also had a delay in his development path.
By that same token, I'd say Morton is no longer a prospect as his 26th birthday is later this month. He's pretty much what he's going to be at this point with a very small chance of some more significant progression.
Okhotyuk is clearly gone, probably for good, but the club still holds control. Chechelev is likely never going to be signed by the Flames, but they hold his rights as well. You could keep these guys as bottom end filler if you wanted, but you could just as easily lose them and nobody would notice.

Cicek/Okhotyuk: out. They are established pros.
Morton: in. He's older but only 1 full season of pro hockey.

We only hold Boltmann's rights until August 15th, 2025 and it's pretty obvious that he probably won't be a Flames prospect by the time the polls are even complete and certainly not before next season starts. I read somewhere that he is starting his masters at university so pro hockey probably isn't even in his future.
I'd take him off the list.

The more the marrier.
If we start on July 7th the day after prospect camp, and the flames play their first preseason game Sept 21st.
We have 76 days to fill.
With Morton there are 44 prospects.
If you do the Math, even with a bunch of three way run offs, and camp starting a couple weeks early we are going to have atleast 10 days to sit around with nothing on the go.

Agree with Jiri and Flames.
Love it, this might be my favourite thing about CP!

Should we delay the start by a few days as well to see if the Andersson deal comes to fruition (or the Byram deal)
That might switch around some of the ranking with prospects either coming in or going out. I think we should get going in mid July

No we should start immediately because that will jinx things and ensure a trade soon follows. In contrast, if we don't start right away that assures that nothing will happen.

We could always say that they have to be eligible for the Calder Trophy to be considered a prospect.
Quote:
Eligibility: To be eligible for the Calder Memorial Trophy, a player cannot have played more than 25 games in any single preceding season nor in six or more games in each of any two preceding seasons in any major professional league. Beginning in 1990-91, a player must not have attained his 26th birthday by Sept. 15 of the season in which he is eligible.

its a good rule of thumb but could be too restrictive on some edge cases- not sure about this year specifically but I think there could be guys that have played either 25 games x1 or 6 games x2 that we would still want to consider

I would keep him in just because he is so early into his pro career.
I think he CAN play 4th line C RIGHT NOW. That said, he has to win that job at training camp.
