Default Matvei Gridin first winner of Sidney Crosby trophy

Surprised not to see anything about this yet, could have gone on Backburner but I think this is big enough news for the main forum: Matvei Gridin won the Sidney Crosby trophy as QMJHL top rookie.

Of all the major awards they could have named after Sid, they chose the only thing thing he hasn’t accomplished in the NHL.

I was going to make a bold prediction that he makes the team out of camp in October, but maybe not that bold:

Quote:
When he was cut at the end of training camp, Flames head coach Ryan Huska spoke about the high expectations he had for Gridin.

“I almost envision him as a guy that’s going to go away and he’s going to dominate in the (QMJHL) and he’s going to come back next year and be in a position to make our team,” Huska said.

Huska didn't make that remark with anyone else who got cut at camp - at least not that I have seen. He was always supportive. He seemed to have gone out of his way to say that he thinks Gridin will really challenge for a spot this year, so I really didn't think it was the customary 'lip service' that coaches and GMs will often do with players.

Those quotes also tell you why it’s silly to think the Flames try to trade for or offer sheet 3rd and 4th liners on other teams. We have a bunch of guys pushing on our team already.

I like how he gets best rookie of the year and says he doesn't feel like he deserves it.

But like, he did win the award in 2004.

What do awards in other leagues really matter?

Gilles Courteau never won the Stanley Cup, does that mean the QMJHL shouldn't have named the league's championship trophy after him?
