Brent Dodginghorse nominated for Willie O'Ree Community Hero Award
Hitmen great Brent Dodginghorse has been nominated for the Willie O'Ree Community Hero Award, for his work with DH Ranch on Tsuut'ina. From their website:
Quote:
At Dodginghorse Ranch, we strive to bring people together through unique, culturally-inspired experiences that foster a deeper understanding of truth and reconciliation. Our Spirit of the Horse activities provide an immersive and interactive way to explore Indigenous culture, while our Diversity awareness education helps broaden perspectives and encourage open-mindedness.
|
Steinberg did a great interview with him on Tuesday's Flames Talk. Brent discusses the discrimination he and others faced during their hockey careers, as well as honouring his Grandmother's wish that the family ranch continue as a place to inspire and nurture young people (starts at 27:50):

Nice.
I recall when he was playing for the Hitmen, I was hoping he'd make it into the NHL. Dodginghorse is such an awesome name.
It's nice to see he found a calling.

The Flames had him as a tryout for training camp I recall. He ended up going to their then-ECHL affiliate Johnstown Chiefs.
Well deserved honour. I hope he wins it.

I can remember him coming into camp in Saint John and playing the preseason.
The name absolutely stuck out. Glad to see him being recognized for his work.

Brent is a good guy. Went to high school with Peter Bergman and him from The Hitmen, we hung out, Dodger was a legendary human being. Glad to hear this!

I was a young teen when he played for the Hitmen but I remember being a massive fan of his and Pavel Brendl.

That was a fun Hitmen team, I remember Brendl and Dodger being fan favourites along with a (I think?) Russian goalie who's name escapes me right now.

That was during the bleakest timeframe for the Flames, it was fun having a hockey team that was successful. That Memorial Cup run was a fun time.

Looking back, it was odd how popular the Hitmen were at that point. But it makes a ton of sense now because of the tire fire of a Flames team.
I clearly remember becoming an Avs fan as a kid because I just knew the Flames couldn't compete.
Another reason why 2004 was so special.
