I think he would be great to hold for years , spend millions of dollars on and rebuild his value to trade at the deadline in a few years
I also think in parallel we should be trading picks to help with depth for this playoff run and selling off cap space

This is pretty wild when you think about it. Chosen in the expansion draft, extended, had a solid career prior to getting there. All arrows pointed up.
Beaten out by Joey Daccord.

Flames could easily help eat that contract for them if they added a sweetner. with him on their team they are pretty much locked into their current roster barring some trades. They have almost no cap room to spend plugging holes after they sign Kakko and Evans and then replace or re-sign Tanev and Gourde (and sign two other dmen after that). 12-13 million to spend on those 6 assets will not get them much, Kakko and Evans could cost them 7-8 million combined alone. Francis may want an extra 6 million to play with.

Daccord, Vanecek and Driedger were taken in the expansion draft.
Grubauer signed as a free agent.

Not surprised; he has not been good.
I wonder who might replace him though? I don’t even recognize any of the other goalies in their system.

The buyout isn't too punishing. He was a top goalie until he got to Seattle. At 33, I don't see him turning it around. He gets bought out. Gets a chance somewhere else as a backup with a league minimum contract and maybe turns it around?

Was it? At the time of the signing most seemed pretty positive about it. He had a solid record up to that point.

No idea if that is realistic, guys like you and Royle9 would know better but I would obviously totally do that. I would even consider adding a 3rd round pick if they wanted. Flames could bury Grubauer in the minors for two years and call it a day and effectively get Wright for a 3rd and Vladar. Guess it would depend on how much value Francis places on cap space.

It is pretty punishing for their cap hit over the next two years. 1.98 million and then 3.08 million. Once you add on the cost of a backup goalie the Kraken might save 1.9 million in year one and about 800K in year two.
