Gary was the first ever commissioner.
Previous to him was Gil Stein as NHL president.

What was Alan Eagleson then? Other than a thief. Could have sworn he was the reason Bettman became the 1st commish.

Unfortunately it will be Daly taking over so I don't see things Gary did that really damaged the game, especially game management going anywhere. That is the number 1 problem with the game right now, game management and no officiating accountability.

NHL officials have never been accountable to anyone. Before the Internet, it was harder to prove that they were incompetent… but some of us still remember Denis Morel's calls that put the Flames out of the playoffs in 1990.

Stein was just a caretaker, really. Basically a John Turner or Kim Campbell of NHL presidents. Bettman was truly taking over from John Ziegler's reign.

If you are an owner it's hard to argue with the results. Just look at where the league is today compared to when he took over. Went from a 24 team league to 32 teams and financially the league has never done better and youth level hockey in the US has exploded to the point they are now right behind Canada in regards to producing elite hockey talent. Sure no Canadian teams have won the cup under his reign but that's more of a factor of Canadian teams being run poorly in general.

I didn’t know he was Jewish and I don’t really care to be honest. The point is that from a fan perspective Bettman wasn’t a good commissioner. He made poor decisions often when it came to the consumer of his product, kind of like the dude in the gif.
Calling for a lifetime suspension for that speaks more to someone’s own delicate sensibilities, and that’s not my problem.

Ahh, I doubt the Flames would still be in Calgary if it wasn't for Bettman back in the late 90's/early 00's. He also turned a million dollar business into a billion dollar business.
